Panther defense tames Savages

THOMAS — The Snake River Panthers reverted to the time tested football formula on Saturday evening, pounding the rock with seven different running backs, who amassed 221-yards of rushing between them and then turned the ball over to their stingy defense who collected a trio of turnovers, leading the Panthers to a 26-7 homecoming victory over the Savages of Salmon.

SHELLEY — Bingham County rivals collided on the volleyball court on Thursday evening as Blackfoot made their inaugural visit to Shelley for a good old fashioned High Country Conference duel.
At the end of the night the host Russets emerged victorious, winning the match in 4 sets 25-22, 21-25, 25-19 and 25-12.
“Beating these 4A and 5A teams has been phenomenal,” Shelley head coach Ceanna Larson said. “There have been many people who have doubted that we could even compete at this level so it is awesome to come out and prove what we can do.”

Officials break ground at Portneuf

POCATELLO — In about a year, Portneuf Medical Center will have a new cancer center. It will open at the same time as the hospital's new facility does the summer of 2011.
"This is really a historic day for the people of Pocatello and all of Eastern Idaho," said Dr. Scott Pierson, a medical oncologist and hematologist at the current cancer center.
Speaking to a small group of cancer survivors and other dignitaries at a ground-breaking ceremony on Sept. 16, Pierson noted that medical and radiation oncology will be under one roof in the new facility.

Absentee voting open

BLACKFOOT — Starting this week, voters can vote absentee in the Bingham County Clerk’s office at the County Courthouse. People can vote absentee until 5 p.m. the Friday before the general election.
Absentee voting closes at 5 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 29. Previously, absentee ballots could be cast until 5 p.m. Monday, the day before any election.
Polls in Bingham County are open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. on election day, Tuesday, Nov. 2.
There are three ways electors can request an absentee ballot. They are:

Dorothy Gaye Pickering Mann Flitton, 81, of Shelley, passed away Sept. 13, 2010, at the University Of Utah Hospital, peacefully surrounded by her family.
Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Friday, Sept. 17, 2010, at the Shelley First Ward Chapel (184 North Park Ave.).
The family will receive friends Thursday from 6-8 p.m. at Nalder Funeral Home (110 West Oak) in Shelley and Friday from 9:30-10:45 before the services at the church.
Interment will be 11 a.m. Saturday in the Randolph, Utah, Cemetery.

Anna Margaret Crumley, 82

Anna Margaret Crumley, our loving mother, left this life to join her eternal dancing partner on Monday, Sept. 13, 2010.
She was born Oct. 15, 1927, in Blackfoot to Alfred and Anna Wilcox Hahn. Margaret lived most of her life in Blackfoot except for a few years when she lived in California.
She was raised and attended school in Blackfoot. Following graduation she attended Ricks College and received her nursing certificate.

Missing boy found safe

BLACKFOOT – As the sun started to set in Blackfoot Monday night, fears began to rise. When 9-year-old Isaac Patton Green did not arrive home from school, officers began searching the area around Ridge Crest Elementary and Jensen Grove, it was not until 7:51 p.m. that the call came announcing he had been found.

BLACKFOOT — Extra time can be a killer and in the instance of the Blackfoot and Idaho Falls boys soccer match on Tuesday evening, extra time played against the Broncos as Idaho Falls scored nearly five minutes after regulation time had expired, leading to a 1-1 tie.
"You never want to allow a late goal in like that but we have nothing to be ashamed about," Blackfoot head coach Liam Pope said. "The fact that we were so close to the prize makes us a bit disappointed about not getting it."

BLACKFOOT — Dennie Hill of Blackfoot didn't expect Tisa Dream Runne to win the Merial Distaff Regional Final horse race at the Eastern Idaho State Fair on Saturday.
"It was really a nice field of mares," said Hill, who shares ownership with his wife Kris. "You couldn't tell who would win the race. I had another mare in it that I thought had a better chance."
"I was pretty damn tickled," Hill said of the horse's win in the $24,500 race. With the win she qualified for the Challenge of Champions in New Orleans, La., in late November.

SHELLEY — The 82nd annual Idaho Spud Day in Shelly begins tonight with the Miss Russet Pageant.
The pageant is at 7 p.m. in the Hillcrest High School Auditorium in Idaho Falls. Eight young ladies are vying for the title of Miss Russet. These contestants are Katie Hatch, Marcy Haney, Stephanie Martineau, Kaitlyn Anderson, Amber Tueller, Kayla Hansen, Rachael Versey and Katelyn Ovard.
To earn this title, each contestant will showcase a talent and outline the community project she will champion.
