Snake River downs South Fremont in first round of Class 3A playofs

POCATELLO – Led by Wyatt Wray’s four touchdown passes, Snake River knocked off South Fremont for the second time this season on Thursday, advancing to the next round of the Class 3A state football playoffs with a 34-23 victory at Idaho State’s Holt Arena.

Legislative redistricting affects Bingham County

BLACKFOOT – The Legislative Redistricting committee has completed its work.
To keep the population of the Shoshone-Bannock tribe together, that group was moved into Legislative District 28 with the eastern side of Bannock County and all of Oneida County.
The city of Pocatello and the area around it are now designated at Legislative District 29.
With the loss of population from the reservation, most of Bingham County has been joined by Butte County.
For the past 10 years, Butte County was part of a legislative district made up of Butte, Jefferson, Clark, Lemhi and Custer counties.

Blackfoot man's INL team plays role in NASA's Mars mission

IDAHO NATIONAL LABORATORY — A Blackfoot man is among those at the Idaho National Laboratory who have a role in NASA's mission to Mars later this year.
Stephen Johnson is director of Space Nuclear Systems and Technologies Division at the INL. His team is responsible for the assembly, testing and certification of a battery which will be used to charge the rover Curiousity when it lands on Mars in August of 2012. Launch of the Mars Science Laboratory from Cape Canaveral, Fla., is scheduled on Nov. 25.
On Wednesday Johnson conducted a tour of his facility for members of the media.

Japanese-American World War II veterans to receive Congressional Gold Medal

BLACKFOOT — Next Wednesday, the prestigious Congressional Gold Medal will be awarded "to the 100th Infantry Battalion, the 442nd Regimental Combat Team and the Military Intelligence Service (MIS), United States Army, collectively, in recognition of their dedicated service during World War II."
The formal award presentation will be made in Washington, D.C.

Sheriff's Office investigating wire thefts

BLACKFOOT — The Bingham County Sheriff's Office is seeking a person of interest in a number of wire thefts in the Shelley/Firth area.
Detectives are investigating numerous reports of wire thefts throughout the county. Most of the thefts have occurred from farm equipment and potato cellars in the Shelley/Firth area, a Sheriff's Office spokesman said.

Ambulance District officials seek permanent levy

BLACKFOOT — A vote on a permanent override for the ambulance district will be on each ballot this November.
"This is nothing new," said Blackfoot Fire Chief Kevin Gray. "There will be no additional increase.
"Every other year, the community supports an ambulance override," Gray said. "What this override does is bring the levy up to the maximum amount that can be levied."
The whole of Bingham County is one ambulance district. Support of the ambulance district shows up on property taxes.

Groveland students learn about agriculture

First graders Halley Boyack and Chaz Spraker at Groveland Elementary take turns grinding wheat during the Idaho Farm Bureau's "Agriculture in the Classroom" Tuesday. After grinding wheat, teachers prepared pancakes for the students to eat. Students also milked a cow.
