December 22, 2011

Neva Maxine Crowell Burks, 85, of Shelley passed away Wednesday, Dec. 21, 2011 at The Gables of Shelley.
A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 27, 2011 at Hawker Funeral Home, 132 South Shilling Avenue in Blackfoot. Family will meet with friends and relatives from 6 to 8 p.m. on Monday Dec. 26, 2011 and for one hour prior to services at the funeral home. Interment will follow at the Grove City Cemetery.

Arthur Hofsetter, 89

Arthur Hofstetter, better known as Uncle Artie, was born in New York City in 1922.  He was a veteran, had a strong work ethic and valued family. 
He enjoyed attending family school recitals and sporting events throughout his life. Uncle Artie was always up for an adventure, taking his nieces and nephews on excursions such as fishing and boating on the Hudson, trips to upstate New York, seeing the “giant heads” in South Dakota and exploring the West to discover the world’s largest petting zoo.

Students celebrate Posadas

BLACKFOOT — Students in the Ridge Crest Limited English Proficiency (LEP) after school program celebrated Posadas with their families and teachers Wednesday evening. The Posadas, a Christmas tradition in Mexico, includes a reenactment of the procession into Bethlehem, culminating with a fiesta.
Approximately 25 students participate in the LEP after-school program Monday through Thursday. They receive help with their homework, work on special projects and get extra support from bilingual staff.

Snake River trustees begin search for new superintendent

THOMAS — Russell Hammond, superintendent of the Snake River School District, is retiring July 31, 2012.
District trustees have begun searching for his replacement. The application period began Dec. 1 and runs through Wednesday, Feb. 15, 2012. Applications must be received by the February date. To date, one application has been received.
"Are we working under a deadline?" asked trustee Steve Reader.
"Yes, you probably want someone in place by July 1," Hammond said.
