Local woman shares 'Cookies for Frankie'

BLACKFOOT — As she sat at a table at St. Bernard Catholic Church's parish hall on Saturday, Gerry Mathias signed and sold a few copies of her newly published children's book, "Cookies for Frankie."
"This has been a three-year process," Mathias said of publication of her book. She said she decided to publish it after entering it in an Idaho Writer's League contest and earning second place.
"I decided maybe this was worth it," she said. She noted it is the true story of how a set of cookie cutters which have been in her family for nearly a century came to be made.

Volunters help out Santa

BLACKFOOT – Organizers and volunteers for the Community Dinner Table and Idaho Foodbank gathered at the Needlecraft Building at the Eastern Idaho Fairgrounds Monday morning preparing Christmas boxes to be distributed today.
Distribution will begin at 10 a.m.; numbers for your place in line will be available beginning at 7 a.m. All recipients must be in line by 9:30 a.m. Boxes will include a frozen turkey or whole chicken and a variety of canned, dried and fresh food including eggs, bread, milk and fresh fruit.

INL engineers help students' minds soar

BLACKFOOT – Rockets were launching, balloons were bursting and imaginations soaring last week as students at Idaho Science and Technology Charter School learned alongside teacher Chad Majeske and INL professionals.
Getting students to like math and science is important to Majeske. He says studies indicate it is in middle school that students decide if they like math and science.
"It's not about whether or not they are good at math and science," said Majeske. "If we can just get them to like it, then when it gets hard they will stick with it."

Daniel Anderson, 56, of Blackfoot, passed away Sunday, Dec. 18, 2011 at the Bingham Memorial Hospital.
Funeral arrangements are pending under the direction of Hawker Funeral Home and will be announced.

Leola P. Line, 81

December 19, 2011

Leola Phyllis Line, 81, passed away Saturday, Dec. 17, 2011 at the Highland Hills Assisted Living.
A visitation will be from 6-7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 21, at Davis-Rose Mortuary, 170 Idaho St., American Falls. The graveside service will be at 1 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 22, 2011 at the Springfield-Sterling Cemetery in Springfield. A full obituary will be in a future edition of the Morning News.

Elizabeth Benally, 67

Elizabeth Benally, 67, of Fort Hall passed away Saturday, Dec. 17, 2011 at her home.
Elizabeth was born June 1, 1944 in Fort Hall to Edward Nappo Sr. and Eula Warren. She attended grade school in Salmon, graduating from Salmon High School. She lived in Salmon, Blackfoot, Fort Hall and Madera, Calif.
In 1971 Elizabeth married Clarence Benally Sr. in Salmon. Together they had three sons, Clarence Jr., Ezra and Conrad.
She was a member of the Episcolpal/Native American Church.

John Charles Traughber, 54

John Charles Traughber passed away at home Dec 14, 2011, after a long and difficult battle with chronic pain.
John was born April 24, 1957, in Pocatello to Charles Percy Traughber and Elsie Lipscomb Traughber. His brothers are Paul Dennis(Mary Anne) Traughber of McCall and Tim Alan (Dawn) Traughber of Arco.

James Bolinder, 45

James Alric Bolinder, 45, of Firth, passed away of natural causes on Dec. 15, 2011, at Eastern Idaho Regional Medical Center in Idaho Falls.
He was born April 30, 1966, in Idaho Falls to Oscar Alric Bolinder and Catherine Lorraine Likes Bolinder. He grew up in the area, graduating from Firth High School.
On Oct. 19, 1994, he married Sarah Logue in Las Vegas, Nev. From this union came a son, Jack, their pride and joy. James and Sarah were later divorced.
He had worked for Fanning Wholesale, Swift Trucking, Wiklund Trucking and Killpack Trucking and retired on disability from GPOD.

Mirella P. Reed, 36

Mirella P. Reed, 36, of Pocatello and formerly of Pingree, passed away Saturday, Dec. 17, 2011 at her home.
Mirella was born May 17, 1975 in Pocatello. Her parents are Marvin and Maria Guadalupe Alcaraz Preston. She was raised and lived most of her life in Pocatello but spent some time in the Blackfoot and Pingree areas. She graduated from Pocatello High School.
She was married to Sam Preston and they were later divorced.
On May 12, 2000, she married Ryan Reed and a year later their marriage was further solemnized in the Idaho Falls LDS Temple on May 12, 2001.

Evelyn Ruth Leffler, 85

Evelyn Ruth Leffler, 85, of Blackfoot, passed away Saturday, Dec. 17, 2011 at her home.
She was born Dec. 11, 1926 in Leadore to Samuel William and Minnie Christina Michaelis Sims. She was raised and received her education in Leadore. During her lifetime she has lived in Wyoming, Utah, Colorado, Montana, Arizona and in Blackfoot since 1978.
On May 24, 1947 she married Keith D. Leffler in Dillon, Mont. He preceded her in death.
Evelyn was a member of Emanuel Lutheran Church.
In the early years of her marriage she worked at J.C. Penney’s.
