Bingham County commissioners file suit against Utah company

BLACKFOOT — Seventh District Judge Darren Simpson has set a trial date for the case of MSW Green Energy Corporation versus Bingham County. County officials are suing the company for non-performance of contractual obligations.
Donald Fredley, president of MSW Green, and Austin Johnson, vice president of MSW Green, have also been named as defendants in this lawsuit.
A jury trial is set to begin at 9 a.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 9. The judge reserved three days for the trial.

Local teacher has a flair for the dramatic

BLACKFOOT – Sharon Hoge has taught in the Blackfoot School District her entire teaching career. Presently, she teaches drama at the Mountain View Middle School (MVMS).
Hoge has also taught first grade and fourth. She taught fifth grade for 10 years at Stoddard Elementary School before joining the staff at MVMS.
“I was hired at MVMS as the Gifted and Talented Coordinator,” Hoge said. “About the same time, the drama teacher at the school quit.

Roger Patterson, 59

Roger Patterson, 59, of Sugar Grove, Ill., passed away April 7, 2011 in Geneva, Ill. He was born Feb. 6, 1952, in Borger, Texas, to TJ and Virginia Patterson.
He was a member of the Sugar Grove United Methodist Church. He enjoyed playing in the hand bell choir; he was a member of their Evangilism and Membership committee; and was active on a church committee to start a community garden.
Roger retired from United Airlines and was currently working at Hesed House, a homeless shelter in Aurora, Ill.

Doris A. Smith, 97

Doris Andersen Smith, 97 a lifelong resident of Blackfoot, passed away peacefully at her home on Saturday, April 9, 2011.
Doris was born on Feb. 18, 1914, in Blackfoot. Her parents were James Henry Andersen and LeVerna Call Andersen. She attended Blackfoot High School and graduated in 1932. She attended college in Pocatello for two years and received her teaching certificate. She taught school in Gorveland for two years. She married Thomas B. Smith In Pocatello on June 21, 1936.

Firth students shine at FCCLA state tournament

BOISE — Firth High School Family, Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) teams took four first place and three second place awards at the state convention that took place over the weekend in Boise.
Four teams from Firth FCCLA, involving seven chapter members, qualified to compete at the national level in July at Anaheim, Calif.
Stephanie Lathrop, a junior, was elected to serve as the Sixth District director.

IAHS principal helps students succeed

BLACKFOOT — The weather hasn't been conducive to training for such things as a triathlon, a competition which involves bike riding, swimming and running.
But Mark Kartchner and his wife Holly are determined to be ready.
"We're working on doing some triathlons this summer," said Kartchner, who is principal of Independence Alternative High School (IAHS). "We're training in the pool and the roads right now.
"I like to fish, too," continued Kartchner. He said he enjoys spending time with his brother-in-law, who is a fishing guide in Washington state.

Doris A. Smith, 97, of Blackfoot passed away Saturday, April 9, 2011, at her home.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, April 15, 2011, at the 6th Ward LDS Chapel, 660 Teton, Blackfoot..Family will meet with friends from 9:30-10:45 a.m. at the church prior to the service.
Services are pending and will be announced by the Hawker Funeral Home.

Ralph F. ‘Bugs’ Dixey, Jr., 74

POCATELLO — Ralph F. Dixey, Jr., 74, passed away Friday, April 8, 2011. at the Pocatello Care and Rehab Center.
He was born Aug. 4, 1936 in Fort Hall to Ralph F. Dixey, Sr. and Virgie Gibson Dixey. He has lived his entire life in the Gibson area of Fort Hall. He attended school in Blackfoot and Chemawa Indian School in Salem, Ore.
In February, 1959, he married Daisy Wenee at Fort Hall.
Ralph served in the United States Navy during the Korean War, aboard the U.S.S. Richard B. Anderson.

Lynn M. Wolfley, 89

Lynn M. Wolfley, 89, of Riverside passed away April 8, 2011, in Blackfoot, five days after his lifelong companion of 70 years, at The Willows Assisted Living Center.
Lynn was born May 12, 1921, in Etna, Wyo., the youngest of 11 children to Henry Louise and Jeanette May McGavin Wolfley. He attended first through eighth grade in Etna and graduated from Moreland High School in 1940, where he excelled as a boxer.
