Stalker students celebrate attainment of reading goal

BLACKFOOT —Sixty-five students at Stalker Elementary received free hats, free books and a party to celebrate reaching their reading goals Friday afternoon.
"Every year it gets bigger and bigger," said Jamie Trevino, the representative for the Volunteers In Service To America (VISTA) at Stalker Elementary. Last year, 40 kids completed the reading challenge.
"It's because of support from the administration and community, donations and grant writing that we have these gifts to give away," Trevino said.

Blackfoot High gets new principal

BLACKFOOT —Trustees of the Blackfoot School District has hired a new principal at Blackfoot High School. In January, former Principal Blaine McInelly took a medical leave of absence until the end of this school year, at which point he will retire.
The Blackfoot School Board of Trustees approved the hiring on John Pearce at their meeting Thursday night. He will officially begin his duties as principal July 28.

Cecil Allen ‘Bud’ Lish, 86

April 29, 2011

POCATELLO – Cecil Allen ‘Bud” Lish, 86, a longtime resident of Pocatello, passed away Tuesday, April 26, 2011, at a local care center following an extended illness.
Funeral services will be held Monday, May 2, 2011, at 1 p.m. at Manning-Wheatley Funeral Chapel, 510 N. 12th Ave. with Ed Reese, brother-in-law officiating. Interment will be in Restlawn Memorial Gardens with military graveside rites provided by the Pocatello Veterans Honor Guard. 

Donald Cannon, 69

Donald Cannon, 69, of Blackfoot passed away Thursday, April 28, 2011, at the Bingham Skilled Nursing and Rehab.
Funeral arrangements are pending under the direction of Hawker Funeral Home and will be announced.

Joe Trent Caldwell, 30

April 29, 2011

Joe Trent Caldwell, 30, of Pingree, died April 25, 2011, as a result of complications due to asthma. 
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, April 30, 2011, at Hawker Funeral Home, 132 S. Shilling Ave., Blackfoot. The family will meet with friends and family from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday, April 29, 2011, at the funeral home and again for one hour prior to service. Interment will be in the Riverside-Thomas Cemetery.

Fred Keith Merrell, 89

Fred Keith Merrell, 89, of Neosho, Mo. and formerly of Blackfoot, passed away, Wednesday, April 27, 2011, at the Medicalodge Nursing Home in Neosho, Mo.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, May 6, 2011, at the Blackfoot LDS Stake Center. The family will meet with friends and family from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday, May 5, 2011, at Hawker Funeral Home, 132 S. Shilling Ave., Blackfoot and again for one hour prior to services at the church. Interment will be in the Grove City Cemetery.

Robert Marion Kerr Jr., 97, of Mapleton, Utah, and, formerly of Blackfoot, passed away Thursday, April 28, 2011, at his home from causes incident to age.
Funeral arrangements are pending under the direction of Hawker Funeral Home.

Snake River students compete in shoe design contest

April 29, 2011

THOMAS — Your vote is needed.
Snake River High School students need your vote to continue in the Vans Shoes sneaker customization contest.
Art students in Jason Coles' advanced placement class designed four pairs of shoes using four different themes—art, music, street fashion and active sports.
The Snake River entry is a finalist in the Northwest Region, having been named one of the top 10 entries in this region.
The nation is divided into five regions. The top vote-getter in each region will travel to New York City.

Cindy Rella opens at Nuart

BLACKFOOT — The Blackfoot Community Players open their new production, "Cindy Rella," tonight at 7:30 p.m. at the Nuart Theatre.
The show will run tonight, Saturday, Monday and May 10, 11, and 13. All shows are at 7:30 p.m. and tickets are $5 opening night and $7 all other nights.
"Cindy Rella" is a fractured fairytale based on the classic Cinderella story. The plot follows Cindy Rella, played by Haley Krehbiel, and her two sisters Sparkle and Sugar, played by Rachel McPhie and Maren Brower. All three are still in high school and showcase the upcoming talent of the Community Players.

Shelley trustees make tentative budget decisions

SHELLEY – Shelley school board trustees met Thursday evening to discuss the budget for the 2011-2012 school year (Fiscal Year 2012).
The anticipated shortfall for that year is approximately $600,000, said Superintendent Bryan Jolley.
So it comes down to three choices — staff reductions, more students in each classroom or cutting salaries, said trustee Loren Lund.
At the conclusion of the two-hour meeting, trustees sort of nibbled around the corners.
To meet the anticipated $600,000 shortfall, these are their decisions:
