Firth trio close out home careers with wins

FIRTH — A trio of seniors played on the Firth softball diamond for the final time on Thursday afternoon as the Lady Cougars battled the Hillcrest junior varsity in a double-dip at Firth High School.
At the end of a pleasant day on the diamond, Firth emerged triumphant on both ends of the double dip, winning in convincing fashion 10-3 in game one and then came from behind for a last inning 9-8 victory in the night cap.
"Overall we played okay, there are still some things that we need to do better like getting our bats going," Firth head coach Rachel Olsen said.

Blackfoot High students seek Skills USA championship

BLACKFOOT – Blackfoot High School auto tech students Morgan Gasca and Dakota Cervenak are competing today at the Ford/AAA Student Auto Skills competition. Both Gasca and Cervenak are seniors.
The 90-minute competition begins at 9:30 a.m. today at the College of Western Idaho. The automotive facility is on the campus of Boise State University. The public is invited.
The top 10 teams in the state qualified for this “hands on” contest based on their scores in a written qualifying exam conducted in February.

Aileen Elisabeth Anderson, 101

Aileen Elisabeth Anderson, 101, of Blackfoot passed away at the home of her daughter, Peggy Jo Wegener, on May 3, 2011.
She has moved on to a better place. Cremation has taken place under the direction of Hawker Funeral Home in Blackfoot. The family will celebrate a memorial later in the summer in Milltown, Mont.

Margaret J. Hansen, 96

Margaret Johnson Heaps Hansen, passed away May 1, 2011, six weeks before her 96th birthday.
She was born in Salt Lake City, Utah, on June 17, 1915, to Carl Gunner Johnson and Hilma W. Wallin Johnson.
She grew up and attended school in Pocatello. She also attended Idaho State College.
She taught school in a one-room schoolhouse in Grays Lake. She also taught in Pocatello. “Sister Heaps” as she was know by her seminary students, taught in Pocatello. She was the first release time female seminary teacher for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Catherine England, 66

Catherine England, 66, of Blackfoot passed away at her home May 2, 2011, following a lingering illness. 
She was born in Blackfoot on Sept. 4, 1944, to Irving Peter Anderson and Goldie Myrtle Moore Anderson. She was the youngest of five children. She was a graduate of Blackfoot High School. She married Melvin T. England on May 22, 1965.

Vernon Pearson, 75

Vernon Pearson, 75, of Pocatello passed away Wednesday, May 4, 2011, at his home.
A viewing will be held Friday, May 6, 2011, from 7-9 p.m. at Hawker Funeral Home, 132 S. Shilling Ave., Blackfoot, and for one hour prior to the service at the church on Saturday.
A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 7, 2011, at the Highland 3rd Ward LDS Chapel, 2300 Butte St., Pocatello.
Burial will take place at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday in the Lost River Cemetery in Arco.

Jacquelin L. Moon, 62

Jacquelin L. Moon, 62, of Sterling passed away Oct. 10, 2010.  A celebration
of life will be held from 2 to 5 p.m. on Saturday, May 14, 2011, at Jacquelin and Lynn Moon's residence at 1061 South 2400 West in Sterling.
