BLACKFOOT — The 4A High Country Conference golf tournament was held on Wednesday afternoon at Blackfoot Municipal Golf Course and at the end of a gorgeous day weather wise, a trio of local golfers qualified for the state tournament.
Leading the way was Shelley's Will Higham who captured the top medalist position by shooting a 77. Also qualifying for the boys team was Higham's team mate Clarke Huntsman who finished third with a 79.
Also joining the state qualifiers was Shelley's Janie Huntsman who finished fourth in the girls standings with a 89.
IDAHO FALLS — The only thing that the Blackfoot baseball team wanted was a chance. A chance to compete for a state tournament bid that on Monday looked as if was going to be washed away with the soaking rain that pummeled Southeastern Idaho.
With the inclement weather, the sixth district considered canceling the post season tournament all together and send the regular season champion Bonneville squad to state to represent the district and the two seeded Hillcrest team to Saturday's play in game.
FIRTH – The Firth City Council has a new member. He is Kent Burch. Tuesday was his second city council meeting.
“I’m just happy to be here; this is all new to me,” he said.
Burch was appointed in April to complete former city councilman Gary White's term. White resigned from this position.
This council position will be open for election in November.
The city's budget meeting has been set for 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 6.
The city is making a little more money (0.3 percent) at Potelco United Credit Union than at the state investment, city clerk Robert Dial said.
BLACKFOOT — Members of the Greater Blackfoot Chamber of Commerce honored 26 area high school seniors on Wednesday.
"These are the best of the best," said Chamber president Derek Preece. "We look forward to what they are going to accomplish in the future."
Each of the students received a certificate and a keepsake in recognition of their high school success.
Representing Blackfoot were Camille Norton, Collin Rockwood, Hanna Miller, Isaac Hong, Dallin Evans, Daniel Burt, Elise Moser, Kevin Sommerorn, Logan Christiansen and Taylor Sandow.

Chelsea Barzee of Independence Alternative High School thanks members of the Greater Blackfoot Chamber of Commerce for a top senior award on Wednesday, Barzee and classmate Wendi Cameron joined Chamber president Derek Preece at the podium. BEND, Ore. — Mildred I. Orton, 85, of Bend, Ore., passed away May 8, 2011, at her home.
She was born Aug. 20, 1925, in Blackfoot to Thomas and Elva Scott Miller. Mildred lived and attended school in the Lost River area, Pocatello, California, and completed her high school in Salt Lake City, Utah. She also attended Business School in Salt Lake City and Pocatello.
REXBURG — Penny Maye Wheeler Blacker Gentillon, 35, of Pingree passed Monday, May 9, 2011, at the Madison Memorial Hospital following a courageous battle with cancer.
She was born Jan. 16, 1976, in Idaho Falls to Norman LaMar and Julia Diane Ricks Wheeler. Penny attended Hillview, Ammon Elementary and graduated from Hillcrest High School. She received her Medical Assistant’s Certificate from EITC in Idaho Falls.
On Nov. 28, 2008, she married Clinton Gentillon in Firth. They made their home in Pingree; she has resided in the Blackfoot area the past nine and a half years.
