Owen Lavell Durfee, 81

June 8, 2011

Owen Lavell Durfee, 81, of Pingree passed away Sunday, June 5, 2011, at the home of his daughter, Ann Sutton, in Twin Falls.
Owen was born April 13, 1930 in Tremonton, Utah, to Melvin Henry Durfee and Erma Sophia Johnson. He was raised until the age of six in Almo, then moved to Pocatello and remained there until 1973 when he moved to Pingree.  He attended school in Pocatello. Owen served his country in the United States Army in the Korean Conflict.
On Aug. 28, 1953, Owen married Patty Lois Rhoades in Pocatello. Their marriage was later solemnized the Idaho Falls LDS Temple in 1959.

Whitney Johnson, 91

Whitney Owen Johnson, 91, of Groveland, passed away June 6, 2011, at Bingham Memorial Hospital of old age.
He was born Nov. 6, 1919, in the farming community of Groveland. His parents, Michael Johnson Jr. and Elsie Mae Paskett Johnson, purchased an 80-acre dairy farm in Groveland where he would live and work for half his life. They also raised apples on the dairy farm. The Johnsons raised potatoes, beets, hay and snakes on a second farm at the end of Bond Road near the lavas.

Lucy Honena Diaz, 87

Lucy Honena Diaz, 87, of Fort Hall passed away Monday, June 6, 2011, at her home.
Lucy was born on Sept. 7, 1923, in Fort Hall, the eldest daughter of Laura Tendoy and Samuel Honena, descended through her great-grandfather Chief Tendoy and her grandfather Toopompey of the Agai’dika or Lemhi band of the Shoshone tribe. Orphaned at the age of nine, she was raised by her grandmother, Nena Tendoy Tissidiment.

Relay for Life golf tournament June 15

BLACKFOOT — The Blackfoot Ladies Golf Association is sponsoring a Relay for Life Golf Tournament June 15 to raise funds for the American Cancer Society.
The tournament will begin at 6 p.m. at the Blackfoot City Golf Course. The cost is $100 per four-person team, which includes green fees and dinner. Cart rental is a separate cost.
Teams are encouraged to register in advance and space is limited to the first eight teams. To register call the Blackfoot CIty Golf Course at 785-9960.
All proceeds will go towards Relay for Life.

Pocatello car dealer makes good on promise

POCATELLO — Last fall, students in the graduating classes from elementary schools in American Falls, Blackfoot, Chubbuck and Pocatello were challenged by Jason Meador, general manager of Phil Meador Toyota, to have perfect attendance—bell to bell, all day every day—throughout the school year. Each student could have no absences, no tardies and no early outs.
The program was called PASS—Perfect Attendance Spells Success.

Blackfoot bans texting while driving

BLACKFOOT — The Blackfoot City Council has banned texting and driving within the city limits. The council unanimously approved the ordinance and waived all readings at their meeting Tuesday. The ordinance goes into effect immediately.
The ordinance clearly defines texting as using an electronic wireless communications device to communicate using a text-based communication including test messages, instant messages or electronic mail.
A texting violation is classified as an infraction and is punishable by a fine of $50.
