Burton Jess Powers, 80, passed away Jan. 11, 2012 in Anchorage, Alaska.
Funeral Services will be Saturday, Jan. 21, 2012 at 1 p.m. at the Anderson Family Funeral Home, 2555 N. Highway 93, Arco. A viewing will be held prior to the service from 11 to 12:45 p.m. Interment will be in the Hillcrest Cemetery in Arco.
LaMar Noble Barrus, 85, of Firth passed away Tuesday, Jan. 17, 2012 in Firth.
He was born Dec. 10, 1926 to Noble Hunter Barrus and Hazel Delilah Larson in his parents’ home in Rose.
LaMar attended grade school through the eighth grade. He had lived in Pingree, Burley, Basalt, Roberts and has lived in Wapello for the last 21 years. He also spent a lot of time at his cabin in Island Park. He also lived in Warden, Mont.
On June 11, 1952, he married Marilyn Fackrell in the Idaho Falls LDS Temple. She preceded him in death on Nov. 15, 2011.
THOMAS — Brent K. Young received his Snake River High School (SRHS) diploma Wednesday evening, only 43 years after he finished high school.
Last month, the Snake River school board members voted to award Young his diploma.
After joining the U.S. Navy in 1968, Young was told he could graduate with his class. The Vietnam conflict changed that when he was called into active duty in October of that year.
"I'm truly excited to do this for you," said SRHS principal Dean Bonney. "My oldest brother graduated in 1969; he is nine years older than I. Things seemed very different then.
BLACKFOOT — With just over four seconds remaining, Blackfoot's Keith Moore got a dream look at the basket from the right baseline where the senior let fly with a three ball that was on line but unfortunately, the ball went just long as it caromed off of the back iron and into the hands of the Madison rebounder.
The three, would have tied the game at 55-55 but instead, the Broncos had to foul the Madison player where he knocked down both free throws and despite a basket at the buzzer by Colby Pearson, the Broncos fell to the fourth ranked team in the state by the final tally of 57-54.
BLACKFOOT — Each year the Prospectors' Club, a community support organization made up of former Chamber presidents and other Blackfoot business leaders, honors one individual.
"It's for those who've gone beyond the norm for the community," said president Leonard Martin, the publisher of the Morning News.
This year's recipient of the Best Foot Forward Award, presented at the Greater Blackfoot Chamber of Commerce luncheon on Wednesday, is Susan Nalley.
BLACKFOOT — Bingham County was in a unique situation last year when the Snake River flooded as county crews worked to clear snow from roads, Bingham County Commissioner Whitney Manwaring said during his State of the County address at the Blackfoot Chamber of Commerce President's Luncheon Wednesday.
The costs associated with the flooding reduced the ability of the county to chip seal roads, which is something the county hopes to work on this year, Manwaring said.
One major project in the works is improvements to Ferry Butte Road from Highway 39 to Tilden Road.
City in good shape financially
BLACKFOOT — In addressing business and community leaders at the Blackfoot Chamber of Commerce President's Luncheon Wednesday, Mayor Mike Virtue said he believes the city is in a good position for economic recovery.
Through frugal budgets and smart decisions, Virtue said the city is in excellent financial shape and that 2012 should be another good year.
"I think we're in a positive position for when the economic recovery happens," Virtue said.
