Shelley-Firth fire district officials seek bond approval

The Shelley-Firth fire district is asking voters to approve a $1.7 million bond. In Shelley, the bond will pay for property and a new fire house. In Firth, the fire station will be renovated and two brush trucks purchased.
The bond request voted on last May was defeated by eight votes. The amount of the bond--$1.7 million--is the same as requested in May, however, fire district official hopes voters will approve it this time. The amount requested is not an addition to the bond that was defeated in May.
To pass this bond, a super majority of voters—67 percent—must approve.

Broncos tip Knights 30-20

BLACKFOOT – In what proved to be a heavyweight slugfest the Blackfoot Broncos prevailed on Friday evening as they overcame a key injury by leaning on their vaunted rushing attack for a 30-20 victory over the Knights of Bishop Kelly in the Class 4A state playoffs.

Russets down Panthers 41-14

POCATELLO – The Shelley Russets converted a fourth-and-17 for their first score of the game on Friday night. Conversely the Snake River Panthers came up six inches short on a fourth-and-goal from the three on the ensuing possession. Those two series were a microcosm of a game in which the Russets capitalized on nearly all of their opportunities while the Panthers came up short. Shelley knocked off the defending Class 3A state champions, 41-14.

Fall back and change smoke detector batteries

On Sunday Daylight Savings Time will end; that's when folks can move clocks back for an extra hour in the day. It's also a great time to change the batteries in smoke alarms, ensuring that alarms will be good in working order throughout the winter months.

Seven-year-old honored for saving mom

Seven-year-old Rozzlyn Cazier may not look like a hero, but she has a plaque from the Shelley Fire Department that declares that she is.
Fire Chief Mike Carter presented the plaque and gift certificates from Red Robin and Kiwi Loco to Rozzlyn in front of her schoolmates at Sunrise Elementary on Friday.
On Oct. 8 of this year, Amber Cazier and Rozzlyn were in an arena near Shelley. Amber, a horse trainer, was inside when a horse kicked her in the face. Amber suffered serious skull fractures.

Snake River vs Shelley

Snake River and Shelley are underway in the 3A playoffs at Holt Arena. Shelley leads 7-0 entering the second quarter.

McKay Cannon scores on a 70-yard run putting Shelley up 13-0 after missing the extra point.

The Shelley defense scores on an interception return and the Russets now lead 20-0 in the second quarter.

Shelley adds a touchdown in the third quarter and is now leading 27-0 over the Panthers.

Cannon finds the end zone again and Shelley extends the lead to 34-0.

Shelley leads Snake River 41-6 in the fourth quarter.

Blackfoot vs Bishop Kelly

Blackfoot and Bishop Kelly have each had the ball twice and both have scored two touchdowns. The score is tied 14-14 after the first quarter.

Ramos finds Pearson in the corner of the end zone for a Blackfoot touchdown late in the second quarter and the Broncos lead 21-14 at the half.

Pearson scores again but the extra point is no good. Blackfoot leads Biship Kelly 27-14 with a minute left in the third quarter.

Blackfoot adds a field goal to make the score 30-14 with four minutes to play in the game.

Cougars dominate post season Nuclear Conference awards

FIRTH — When a team rolls undefeated through a conference season and then finishes second in the state one would expect several post season honors to follow.
That is exactly the case with the Firth Cougar volleyball squad as they took home player of the year honors, coach of the year honors and five first team all Nuclear Conference selections for the 2012 season.
Sophomore Bailey Nelson was named the player of the year for coach of the year Carla Reeves while Ashley Sanders, Kayla Jensen, Blakely date, Jordyn Park and Taylor Nelson each were selected to the first team.

Cougars maul Trojans 70-6

POCATELLO — Idaho State's Holt Arena has seen it's fair share of blow outs over the years and on Thursday evening another was added to the long list as the Firth Cougars mauled the Trojans of Wendell with a 70-6 2A state quarterfinal victory.
"I thought that we had a very solid game plan and the kids executed what we had planned," Firth head coach Keith Drake said.

Searchers recover body of Blackfoot man from Snake River

It was a tragic ending to a long day of searching along the Snake River, near Wadworth Island west of Blackfoot, as searchers recovered the body of Vaughn Kepler, 59, of Blackfoot early Thursday evening.
