Artisan displays craft at local gallery

For 15 years, Blackfoot’s Jim Curlee has been practicing wood turning, the art of designing and building artistic bowls, vases, urns and hollow forms as well as user bowls, such as salad and fruit bowls. Some salad bowls measure 16 to 18 inches.
“I can make large bowls or smaller bowls; whatever people request,” Curlee said.
“Like most wood turners, I started out using solid pieces of wood,” he said. “I soon discovered that large, highly figured pieces of wood were hard to find and very expensive when you did find them.

Candidates can file for office starting today

BLACKFOOT – Bingham County residents who are interested in running for county public offices can pick up their Declaration of Candidacy packets in the County Clerk’s Election office at the courthouse in Blackfoot.
Today is the first day to file. Candidates may do so from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday. The filing period closes at 5 p.m. on Friday, March 6.
The names of qualified candidates will be on the ballot for the Primary Election on Tuesday, May 15.

Bingham County sends 12 to semifinals at State Wrestling Championships

POCATELLO — Day one of the Idaho State Wrestling Championships are in the books and after a long day on the mats, 21 of the Counties 58 wrestlers remain alive in the two day battle royal.
Of the 21 remaining wrestlers, 12 of those remain unbeaten and will be looking for the top spot on their respective medal podiums early this evening.

LITTERING: Feb. 21, 7:37 a.m.: A woman said someone put trash in her vehicle and on her windshield.

SHOTS FIRED: Feb. 21, 3:04 p.m.: A woman said she heard four gunshots near Goodwin Drive.

GAS THEFT: Feb. 21, 6:43 p.m.: A caller at Maverik reported a vehicle leaving without paying for $15.04 in gas.

JOYRIDING: Feb. 22, 2:35 a.m.: A woman said her daughter loaned her vehicle to a friend without permission.

Martha Marlene 'Molly' Caldwell, 21

Martha Marlene “Molly” Caldwell, 81, of Blackfoot passed away peacefully in her sleep on Thursday, Feb. 23, 2012 in Blackfoot.
Molly was born April 9, 1930 in Idaho Falls to David John and Martha Surilda Elliott. She grew up in the Lincoln area and graduated from Ammon High School in 1948.

James 'Jim" Carl Knudsen, 65

James “Jim” Carl Knudsen, 65, of Hayden Lake passed away Sunday, Feb. 19, 2012 at Kootenai Medical Center in Coeur d’Alene.
Jim was born July 27, 1946 in Chico, Calif., to Carl Einar Knudsen and Catherine Lawrence. He attended school in California, graduating from high school in Santa Rosa, Calif. 

Inquiries made about trustee recall

A local attorney made Inquiry on behalf of a client in the Bingham County clerk's office about the process of recalling a school trustee in the Blackfoot School District on Thursday.
This recall inquiry was made regarding school trustee Peter Lipovac who represents Zone 1. Lipovac was elected and took office in 2009. His term ends in 2013.
As of 2011, the county handles all elections.
According to Idaho Code 34-1702, the [recall] petition shall be filed with the county clerk of the county wherein the district is located.

Thumbs up for heart disease awareness

Steven Moldenhauer has found a unique way to raise awareness about heart disease. As part of his "Thumbs Up for Women's Heart Health Month" campaign, Moldenhauer is painting people's thumbnails aorta red. Moldenhauer is conducting this campaign in support of his sister, Brady Meline, who suffers from microvascular disfunction and Prinzmetal spasms.
Moldenhauer said he started to get the idea for the "Thumbs Up" campaign earlier this week as he watched Meline paint her thumbnails red.

Blackfoot horse wins race in Oregon

The quarter horse, BCR Buds For All, won the Portland Meadows quarter horse race Monday. This 5-year-old American Quarter Horse is owned by Jeff Steadman of Blackfoot.
"You have a 10 percent chance of winning because there are 10 horses running," Steadman said.
Steadman bought Buddy as a weinling—a 5-month-old colt—from Billingsley Creek Ranch.
Buddy was bred for running, Steadman said. Buddy is now 5 years old. Monday's race was Buddy's 26th. He has won seven starts.
