Dreher named Blackfoot's DYW

BLACKFOOT — The theme was "Once Upon A Time..." and it was indeed a fairy tale evening for the audience and participants alike at the Distinguished Young Women of Blackfoot program at Blackfoot's Performing Art Center Wednesday evening; especially for Heidi Dreher, daughter of Dean and Lee Ann Dreher, who was was named Blackfoot's Distinguished Young Woman (DYW) of the Year.

BHS debaters qualify for nationals

BLACKFOOT — Five Blackfoot High School debaters have qualified to compete at nationals.
Sophomore Blake Dewveall is the Idaho gold medal winner for Extemporaneous Speaking.
The team of Marquette Lawrence and Brandon Turner will compete in public forum. Both students are juniors.
Senior Tylie Polatis is competing in Lincoln-Douglas debate.
The National Forensic League competition is June 11-15 in Indianapolis, Ind.
Senior Brad Carter qualified to compete in Lincoln-Douglas debate at the Catholic National Forensic League (CNFL) competition May 25-27 in Baltimore, Md.

Lady Broncos end regular season with split double header

POCATELLO — It was a roller coaster ride to the finish of the regular season on Thursday as the Blackfoot Lady Broncos split their road double dip at Century by first falling 5-4 in eight innings in the opening game before rebounding for a tidy 1-0 victory in the night cap.
"It was really, really important to come out and get that win in game two after losing that first one," Blackfoot head coach Matt Chavez said. "The attitudes of the entire team was just fantastic."

Shirley Fox Hager, 94

Shirley Fox Hager, 94, of Aberdeen passed away Monday, April 30, 2012 at the Bingham Memorial Skilled Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Blackfoot of natural causes.
Shirley was born on June 6, 1917 in Downey. She was the fourth child of six born to Raymond and Mary Elizabeth Burrup Fox.  Shirley was raised in Downey.
Shirley was married to Caleb Verl Vaughn where she had four children. They were later divorced. She then met and married John L. Hager who had three daughters and in this union added four sons.

Cliff Benson, 56

Cliff Benson, 56, of Blackfoot, passed away on Monday, April 30, 2012.He was born on March 19, 1956, in Pocatello, to Sam and Shirley Benson. He grew up in Pocatello and attended Franklin Junior High and Pocatello High School, where he met his first wife, Sandy Allison. They had one child, Jamie. They were later divorced.
Later, he met and married LaDawn Tharp on July 24, 1976. There were two children born from this union, Jeff and Joe. They lived on the family farm in Taber, outside of Blackfoot, for 30 years.
Cliff was a veteran of the United States Army.

One can't help but notice the sparkle in her eyes as Blackfoot native Monica Nevarez talks about her love of Zumba and her new business venture: Centi-Z-Team. It's a Zumba fitness center, opening May 7 in the El Centenario Event Center (formerly Ridley's Grocery Store) in Blackfoot.
Nevarez describes Zumba as a "calorie-burning Latin inspired-dance fitness workout" that is taking the world and Blackfoot by storm.
"Zumba is amazing," Nevarez said. "Everyone should try it at least once."

Candidates share their positions once again

DeLoy and Lois Larsen and Bob German had specific reasons for attending Wednesday's candidate forum at the Bingham County Senior Citizens Center.
"I came because I have no idea who to vote for," said Lois.
"I hope to become somewhat informed," DeLoy added.
German said, "I'm tired of people telling me they're conservative when they're not."
They listened to state senate candidates Steve Bair and Cherie Clawson as well as state representative candidates Bob Butler, Mike Duff, Neil Anderson, Jim Marriott, Barbara Clark, Dave Moore and Julie VanOrden.

Police agencies involved in standoff

MORNING NEWS
Bingham County deputies, as well as agencies from Bannock County and Fort Hall, were involved in a standoff on Reservation Road late Wednesday night.
According to scanner traffic, the incident began as a high-speed chase after an unidentified man fired shots at a Bingham County residence. Deputies were then involved in a high-speed chase during which the suspect told a dispatcher to have deputies back off or he would kill himself.

Seniors key 13-2 Broncos victory

BLACKFOOT — It was a fabulous way to end the regular season and for a quintet of seniors and even better way to leave the home field a winner as the Blackfoot Broncos sent Jeremy Leavitt, Jeremy Johnson, Jaron Katseanes, Colton Fairchild and Shawn Whitehead home with fond memories of their 13-2 conference win over Rigby on Wednesday evening.
"It was nice to get a home win," Blackfoot head coach Kenny Dahle said.
Not only did the seniors go away winners on senior night but they each played big roles in the final outcome of the game as well.
