County commissioners reject subdivision bid

BLACKFOOT — Bingham County commissioners unanimously denied a request by the Four Seasons Ranch Subdivision at 35 S. 250 East, Blackfoot to re-plat two lots into three. The subdivision is four miles east of Blackfoot off Rich Lane.
The recommendation from the Planning and Zoning (P&Z) commissioners was to deny this request because of concerns about the water system and whether it would be able to handle additional septic systems.
At an earlier P&Z hearing, residents in the subdivision presented evidence of high nitrate levels of private wells.

Otter talks education in his State of the State address

BOISE, Idaho (AP) — State spending on public schools would increase more than $30 million next year under the governor's proposed budget, which also includes a $21 million boost in general funding for Idaho's colleges and universities.

Gov. C.L. "Butch" Otter on Monday also proposed replenishing the rainy day account for public schools and kicking in the first state payment to a similar account for higher education.

Public schools chief Tom Luna wanted at least $60 million of a projected state surplus to go toward the public education budget in the fiscal year that starts July 1.

Virgilena LeClair, 65

Virgilena LeClair, 65, of Fort Hall passed away Thursday, Jan. 5, 2012 at the Pocatello Care and Rehabilitation Center in Pocatello, Idaho.
Virgilena was born May 25, 1946 in Pocatello to Leonard and Lydia G. Stone.  She graduated from Blackfoot High School and attended Idaho State University in Pocatello.
In the early 1970’s, Virgilena married Lonny LeClair in Fort Hall.

Kim Dallin Watt, 59

January 9, 2012

Kim Dallin Watt, 59, of Pingree passed away Tuesday, Jan. 3, 2012 at the Bingham Memorial Hospital.
Kim was born Sept. 14, 1952 in Blackfoot, Idaho to David D. and Mignon Michaelson Watt. He was raised on the farm in Pingree and received his education in Blackfoot.
Kim was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
He worked at Dawn Enterprises in Blackfoot.
Kim enjoyed throwing basketballs. He especially loved helping his Dad in the hay fields, camping with his Mom and Dad and going to the State Fair on Disabled Day with Kelly Koontz.

Kay Stringham

Kay Stringham, 83, passed away peacefully, at his home, on Wednesday, Jan. 4, 2012.
Kay was born Aug. 26, 1928 in Bone to Platte Lyman Stringham and Ruby Jones. He married his high school sweetheart, Margene Going, on Oct. 21, 1949 in the Idaho Falls LDS Temple. Together they raised two sons and four daughters.

Garth Phelps, 79

January 9, 2012

Garth Phelps, 79 of Blackfoot, passed away peacefully with his family around him Saturday, January 7, 2012, at the Portneuf Medical Center in Pocataello following a short  illness.
He was born June 11, 1932 in Idaho Falls, Idaho, the son of Roland and Eldora Gardener Phelps.
He has lived in various places including Blackfoot, Arco, Pocatello, Bullhead City, AZ and Mackay. He graduated from Pocatello High School in 1951.
He was married to Gloria Ferri on November 18, 1952, in Elko Nevada.

Matthew R. Marriott, 56

January 9, 2012

Matthew R. Marriott, 56 of Blackfoot, died December 30, 2011 at the Eastern Idaho Regional Medical Center.
No Services are planned at this time. Services are under the direction of Hawker Funeral Home.

Ken Kenji Ugaki, 87

January 9, 2012

Ken Kenji Ugaki, 87, died Friday, January 6, 2012, in Blackfoot following an illness.
Funeral services will be conducted on Saturday, January 14, 2012, at the Hawker Funeral Home, 132 S. Shilling Ave., Blackfoot.
The family will meet with friends on Friday evening from 7-9 .m. at the funeral home and for an hour prior to services.
A full obituary will be forth coming.

Glenn Maylen Stoddard, 92

Glenn Maylen Stoddard, 92 of Blackfoot, died Sunday, January 8, 2012 at the Bingham Skilled Nursing Center in Blackfoot.
No services are planned at this time. Services are under the direction of Hawker Funeral Home in Blackfoot.

Lyda Roberts Kniffin, 92

Lyda Elizabeth Roberts Kniffin, 92, of Fort Hall, Idaho passed away Friday, January 6, 2012 at her home.
She was born July 25, 1919,  in Owyhee, Nevada, the daughter of Bud and Elsie Gilbert Roberts.
Lyda attended school in Stewart and Elko, Nevada.
She married Thomas Chuck Kniffin and they later divorced.
Lyda has lived in the Fort Hall area for the last 65 years.
She work as a nurse for Bannock Medical Center, St. Anthony Hospital, Bingham Memorial Hospital and Indian Health Services.
