'Layaway Santa' rings up $21k for strangers

NBC—He was just going to pick up bicycles for a charity event. Instead, this real-life Santa turned his stop at a central Florida Wal-Mart into an early Christmas delivery for 76 strangers.

Greg Parady, 40, was at The Villages Wal-Mart last Saturday to pick up the bikes for a Toys-for-Tots drive held by his financial planning firm, when he overheard a woman saying she didn't know if she could afford her layaway this year and might have to cancel her order.

P&Z panel approves pair of applications

Planning & Zoning (P&Z) commissioners approved the requests of both applicants on Wednesday.
P&Z commissioners unanimously recommended approval of a four-lot preliminary plat for the New Meadows III Subdivision. Clem Yancey made this request. The plat is in a residential zone approximately 135 N. 365 W.
The P&Z commissioners also unanimously approved a six-foot variance to setback requirements for a communication tower at 138 N. 740 W.

Lady Russets knotch first win of season

SHELLEY — When the Shelley and Snake River girls basketball teams met last Saturday in Thomas it was a third quarter run by the home team that earned the Panthers the victory.
The teams met again in Shelley Thursday night and the outcome was much different than six days earlier.

Texas teen's fatal DWI defense: 'Affluenza'

HOUSTON (AP) — "Affluenza," the affliction cited by a psychologist to argue that a North Texas teenager from a wealthy family should not be sent to prison for killing four pedestrians while driving drunk, is not a recognized diagnosis and should not be used to justify bad behavior, experts said Thursday.

Vicki Bullock Williams, 61

Vicki Bullock Williams, 61, of Blackfoot passed away Monday, Dec. 9, 2013 at her home, surrounded by her loving family and friends.
Vicki was born May 13, 1952 in Pocatello to Leo Everett Bullock and Helen Mar Romriell.  Vicki graduated from Marsh Valley High School.  She has lived the past 30+ years in Blackfoot. 
On March 23, 1984, Vicki married Lynden Williams in Pocatello. 

Leathie Valarie Dixey, 65

Leathie Valarie Dixey, 65, of Blackfoot passed away Monday, Dec. 9, 2013 at  Quinn Meadows in Pocatello.
She was born Nov.29, 1948 in Pocatello to Ralph Frances Dixey, Sr. and Virgie Gibson Dixey.
She attended school in Blackfoot and has lived her entire life in the area.
She married Marvin Lee Tissidmit in August 1965.  He preceded her in death on June 12, 2008.
Leathie taught school at Sho-Ban school and drove school bus as well.  She was bilingual and taught the Shoshone language. She worked as a teacher's aide for Blackfoot School District for several years.

Panther grapplers earn split

POCATELLO — Snake River opened wrestling season at Highland with a bang on Wednesday. The Panthers beat Pocatello 39-37 and dropped a 50-26 decision to Highland.

City Council makes alleyway a one-way

In an effort to help ease evening congestion in downtown Blackfoot, the Blackfoot City Council unanimously approved a recommendation to make the alley between Broadway and Ash - running from Pacific to Bridge Street - a one-way street at its meeting on Tuesday.
Blackfoot Mayor Mike Virtue explained that a traffic problem is created in the area when evening activities are going on, particularly dance lessons at Downtown Dance studio.

Christmas Extravaganza festivities continue

Tuesday marked the second day of the Christmas Extravaganza at the museum. Wednesday, the museum will be open from 4 - 8 p.m., complete with a performances by Hovia Edwards at 5 p.m. and Angela Carlson at 6 p.m.

Madison runs past Blackfoot 63-36

BLACKFOOT — For a quarter the Blackfoot boys basketball team hung with 5A Madison, but things quickly fell apart in the remaining three quarters.
A 17-2 third quarter run by the Bobcats was the final nail in the Broncos coffin as Madison cruised to a 63-36 victory Tuesday night at Blackfoot High School.
"Usually my kids just play hard from start to finish, but not tonight," Blackfoot head coach Dan Hale said. "They were content to just concede the game and try and keep it under 30."
