Historical Society presents Christmas Extravaganza

December 10, 2013

A tour of the Bingham County Historical Museum at 190 N. Shilling Ave. in Blackfoot is a step back into time.
The museum is open from 4-8 p.m. each evening this week and from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday. Admission is free this week.
Different activities are planned each evening but always there is a Christmas story time at 7 p.m.
Today, Alex Jensen will perform at 5 p.m.; Deanne Casperson will perform at 6.

Irene O. Hammond, 93

Irene O. Hammond blessed her family with her example of love and faith.  She passed away peacefully at her home on her birthday, December 4, 2013, at the age of 93.
She was born Melva Irene Ogborn December 4, 1920, in Blackfoot, Idaho, to Charles L. and Montana Boice Ogborn.  Irene grew up in Blackfoot during the depression, the youngest of four children, and attended Blackfoot schools through her junior year.  She moved with her parents to Omak, Washington, in 1937, where she graduated from high school.

Young bowler wins first event

BLACKFOOT — Six-year-old Spencer Gohr has grown up in a family of bowlers.
His father, Shad, grandparents Gary and Karen Keith and great-grandparents have have enjoyed both the social and competitive aspects of the sport.
Either this season Spencer, Shad and Karen teamed to win the inagural Curtis MacFee Memorial Youth-Adult tournament at Pindale Lanes.
"It was special for us because Curtis has been like an older brother or uncle to our family," Karen said. "Every kid who has gotten to know him has loved him."
MacFee died in a four-wheeler accident in August of 2012.

Post play key in Panthers win over Shelley

THOMAS — On Thursday night Shelley Lady Russets junior center Brecklyn Hobbs was locked up in a physical match-up with Firth's Bailey Nelson.
Hobbs held the dangerous Nelson to zero points in the game.
Saturday night, Hobbs and the rest of the Lady Russets made the perilous drive for Shelley to Snake River where Hobbs faced another tough match-up this time with Lady Panthers Brylie Bair.

Dance competition brings money into community

About 600 dancers and their families are in town this weekend for the Western States Dance Classic of the Idaho Invitational Dance Competition at Blackfoot High School and local businesses are happy to see them come. This is the 22nd year for the competition and the third year that it has been held in Blackfoot. Overall, the event draws around 2,000 people to Blackfoot from Southern Idaho and Utah.

BLACKFOOT—A passion for baking, a handful of blue ribbons from the Eastern Idaho State Fair and a boyfriend who encouraged her to "follow her dreams" has inspired Lisa Jennings of Blackfoot to start her own home-based baking business. She appropriately calls herself (and the business) "Cookie Momster."
Jennings, a graduate of Blackfoot High School, said she has loved baking every since she took home-ec in high school over 20 years ago. She also learned a lot from her mother, Rita Jennings, who is a cook for the Blackfoot School District.

Lady Broncos take down Bonneville 53-45

IONA — The Blackfoot Lady Broncos kicked off 4A District 5/6 play Thursday night with a 53-45 win over Bonneville at Bonneville High School.
Ella Alvarez scored a team-high 20 points after being held in check for the last three games.
MorningRose Tobey was held in check from the field by Bonneville, but she made her presence known in other ways.
Tobey had 10 assist and nine rebounds in the game.
"We are just about where we want to be," Blackfoot head coach Merle Smith said. "We have been playing well lately and when we can get our first league win on the road, that is big for us."

Experienced ice fisherman shares advice

BLACKFOOT — Doug Coffman's earliest memories of ice fishing go back nearly five decades.
"When I was about 12 years old, my maternal grandfather (Lionel Harris) asked if I wanted to go ice fishing with him and I jumped at the chance," said Coffman, a Blackfoot businessman.
At that time, they went to Fish Creek Reservoir northwest of Craters of the Moon.
"The fishing was great," Coffman said. "It was hot."
In Eastern Idaho ice fishermen can catch trout, Kokanee salmon, yellow perch, bluegill and an occasional bass depending upon the waters.

Firth grinds out win over Shelley

FIRTH — While the temperature outside of Firth High School hovers around zero, the shooting on the floor was equally as cold as the Lady Cougar took on northern Bingham County rival Shelley Thursday night.

JoAnn Williams, 80

JoAnn Williams, 80, of  Moreland passed away peacefully at her home on Monday, Dec. 2, 2013 from a long term illness.
JoAnn was born Dec. 25, 1932 in Montpelier to James Rasmussen and Mary Emma Barkdull Rasmussen.  She lived her early life in Pocatello and later moved to Moreland.  She attended Pocatello High School.
On Oct. 31, 1951 JoAnn married Blake Williams in Winnemucca, Nev.  They had three sons, Steve, Brent and Rick.
JoAnn was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and enjoyed visiting teaching.
