Greg 'Slim' Smith, 63

December 5, 2013

Greg “Slim” Smith, 63, passed away Saturday, Nov. 30, 2013 at his home surrounded by his family.
            Slim came into this world on Aug. 2, 1950, born to Grant G. Smith and Charlotte Britt Smith.  He was born in Helena, Montana and spent his early childhood years in Helena and Bozeman, Montana before his mom and step-dad located to Blackfoot in 1963.  Slim quickly made Blackfoot his own, making friends along the way.  He graduated from Blackfoot High School in 1968 and has lived in Blackfoot since then.

Power restored to Southeastern Idaho

FIRTH — When electric power goes out, it sure becomes quiet—and still.
Temperatures hovered about 1 degree Wednesday morning with a chill factor of -4 degrees when some 49,000 Rocky Mountain Power customers woke up to no power.
As of 4:20 p.m., the system showed all customers were restored to power.

CDR Ronald Lewis Stoddart, USN, Ret., 82

CDR Ronald Stoddart, 82, died Nov. 23, 2013 after a brief struggle with leukemia.
Ron was born on Sept. 29, 1931, in Idaho Falls, the first child of Lewis James and Verda Mae Judd Stoddart.
When he was a young boy the family moved to Blackfoot where Ron attended school through graduation.
He joined the U.S. Navy in August 1950, and followed his dream to become a naval aviator.
He married his beloved wife, Jean Marie Harvey, on Dec. 18, 1965.

Grace Smith Lilya, 90

December 5, 2013

Grace Smith Lilya, 90, of Groveland/Rose, passed away Tuesday, Dec. 3, 2013 at her home.
She was born July 9, 1923 in Riverside, the daughter of Don Cleveland Smith and Alice Velma Ogden.
On July 9, 1943 she married Claude Everett Lilya in the Logan LDS Temple. He preceded her in death on March 10, 2011.

Christmas Tree Fantasy auction tonight

December 4, 2013

he tree auction at the Christmas Tree Fantasy begins tonight at 7 p.m. at the Needlecraft building on the Eastern Idaho State Fairgrounds.
Registration for the auction begins at 6:30 p.m. Hors d'Ouerves will be served.
Nearly 50 items will be auctioned this evening. There are three memorial trees and one memorial wreath up for auction.

Loomis wins mayoral runoff election

Paul Loomis was elected mayor of Blackfoot on Tuesday. The final tally was Loomis 923; Dan Cravens 502.
In the Nov. 5 election that set up this runoff election, voting tallies were Loomis 667; Cravens 452.
The total number of people who voted in this runoff election was 1,425. The total number of electors in the November election was 1,708. There were six candidates seeking the mayoral position in November.
The final voting tallies for this runoff election were posted in the Bingham County Clerk's election office 16 minutes after the polls closed.

Woman fights ticket for driving with google glass

LOS ANGELES — A California woman pleaded not guilty Tuesday to what is believed to be the first traffic citation alleging a motorist was using Google's computer-in-an-eyeglass.

The device, known as Google Glass, features a thumbnail-size transparent display above the right eye.

The technology will not be made widely available to the public until 2014, but defendant Cecilia Abadie was one of about 10,000 "explorers" who received the glasses earlier this year as part of a tryout.

Christmas Tree Fantasy opens Wednesday

BLACKFOOT — Come check out "A Child's Christmas" at the Bingham County Christmas Tree Fantasy. It is in the Needlecraft Building on the Eastern Idaho State Fairgrounds in Blackfoot.
The event begins with a tea this evening, sponsored by Bingham Memorial Hospital.
Volunteers were decorating trees and the building on Monday. The curtains encircling the room were donated by Pilar Ramirez of SA-SYS in Blackfoot.
Asked why she was decorating a tree, Francie Jeffery said, "It's a good cause."
"The money goes to charities," said Girl Scouts Katelynn Edmo and Sierra Key.

Willis William “Bill” Cunningham, 95

December 2, 2013

Willis William “Bill” Cunningham passed away quietly at his home Wednesday, November 20, 2013.
He was born August 27, 1918 in Woodville, Idaho, the seventh child of John and Laura Cunningham. The flu epidemic was in full swing and took his mother nearly three months later. Bill graduated from Idaho Falls High School, the only one of his family to do so.
After high school, he began working for room and board at his brother-in-law’s service station. He was an avid fisherman and began tying flies and selling them. He sold a lot and soon started selling fishing tackle.
