Standoff at Fort Hall ends with death of suspect

Bannock County Sheriff's deputies shot and killed a man who shot at them during a standoff near the Fort Hall Indian Reservation on Wednesday.
Bannock County Sheriff Lorin Nielsen confirmed that officers shot and killed Boede Paul, whose hometown or age he didn't list, about 7 p.m. to end a standoff which had begun about 1:30 p.m. that day.
Nielson said Paul told detectives that he had killed Angeleah "Leah" Schultz, a Pocatello woman who was reported missing on Jan. 6. Police found the 23-year-old mother of two's car at Pine Ridge Mall in Pocatello two days after she disappeared.

BLACKFOOT — Water…we use it every day. It is at our fingertips with the turn of a faucet. We wash our dishes, clothes and take showers in the beautiful substance we often take for granted until suddenly, it is gone. Water has the chemical ability to turn to a gas when it is hot and freeze solid when it is cold. Freezing water is great for ice cubes and snow but when it comes to frozen plumbing, we would rather it not.

Cougars win Bingham County cat fight with Tigers

ABERDEEN — It was a 2A Bingham County cat fight on Tuesday evening as the Firth Cougars traveled to Aberdeen for a tussle with the Tigers on the hardwood.
Aberdeen led by as many as 17 points in the contest but Firth showed their collective metal as they overcame the deficit for a 52-50 road win.
"Obviously we didn't start out as well as we would have liked," Firth head coach Scott Adams said. "We were prepared we just didn't come out ready but hand it to Aberdeen, they came out and shot lights out and played well. I'm just proud of my kids and the way that they were able to overcome tonight."

Leo Thomas Cerino, 74

Leo Thomas Cerino, 74, of Blackfoot passed away Saturday, Jan. 12, 2013 at The Willows in Blackfoot.
 Leo was born July 6, 1938 to Columbo Cerino and Esther Judith Madzeweyu.  Leo was raised in Blackfoot, graduating from Blackfoot High School.  He attended barber school in Dallas, Texas, and moved to Arizona where he lived for over 40 years, with his companion, Agnes Soliz, before returning home to live in Idaho.
 Leo married Gay Cutler and they  divorced.  He later married Joyce Ballard and they later divorced.

Car hits school bus at railroad crossing

Difficulty stopping on a slick road caused the driver of a small Volkswagen to slide into the rear of Blackfoot School District Bus #96-1, while it was stopped at a railroad crossing traveling west on Walker Street Monday afternoon. The accident caused severe damage to the front of the vehicle which became lodged under thick bumper and tow hook on the bus.
According to district transportation director Melissa Carassco, there were three special needs students from Blackfoot High School on the bus at the time. No one on the bus was injured.

Michael 'Joe' Lusk, 65

Michael “Joe” Lusk, 65, of Blackfoot, passed away Tuesday, Jan. 8, 2013 at the Portneuf Medical Center from complications of cancer.
He was born Feb. 8, 1947 at Pocatello to Ralph Bailey and BernaDeane Brower Lusk.  Joe was raised in the Arbon Valley and attended school in Pocatello, graduating from Pocatello High School.  He has lived in Arbon Valley, Pocatello and Blackfoot.
Joe joined the United States Navy in 1966; he served in the Vietnam War and was stationed at Cam Ranh Bay.  Following his four-year tour of duty he was honorably discharged.

Joyce D. Wallace, 77

Joyce Derlene Wallace, 77 of Carpenter, Wyo., died Monday, Jan. 7, 2013, at the Life Care Center in Cheyenne.
She was born Oct. 29, 1935 in Pueblo, Colo., and had lived in Carpenter since 1998.
Joyce was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She enjoyed painting.

Jeraldine T. Duncan, 74

Jeraldine T. Duncan, 74, of San Tan Valley, AZ, formally of Blackfoot ID. passed away on January 8, 2013 in Gilbert, AZ. Born in Brigham City, UT to Floyd and Ardella (Nelson) Turner, Jerry arrived on November 3, 1938. She was the oldest of seven children. Her siblings were Rodger, Rayola, Alina, Edward, Howard, and Lana Turner.
She worked as a Pharmacy Technician at Arnell Drug and Wal-Mart in Blackfoot Id. until she retired in 1994. Jerry will be remembered as a great fisherman, an avid gardener, and her craft creations. She did what she wanted when she wanted.

Donald Wayne Wood, 60

Donald Wayne Wood, 60, of Blackfoot passed away Thursday, Jan. 10, 2013 at his home, due to complications from dementia and Alzheimer’s.
 Donald was born April 12, 1952 in Blackfoot to Daniel Claude and Josephine Lewis Wood.
 He grew up in the Blackfoot area, living in Fort Hall, Thomas and Blackfoot.  He graduated from Blackfoot High School in 1970.  He then attended Ricks College and received his bachelor’s degree from Idaho State University.
