The Snake River Panthers took center stage as they opened the 2013 Class3A state basketball championship tournament against the Buhl Indians on Thursday. Riding a nine-game winning streak Snake River looked to run it to 10 and that is exactly what they did, although it was a little tighter than anticipated, as they held off a furious Buhl comeback attempt before escaping with a 38-37 victory.
While many urgent issues need to be addressed, Blackfoot School District 55 trustees will not have a school board meeting in the month of February, because of a lack of a quorum to legally conduct business.
Students from Blackfoot and Firth high schools will have a full day in a real Bingham County courtroom on Saturday. They will be competing in the annual "Idaho Law Foundation's" Mock Trial Competition.
Four teams consisting of 6 to 9 students from Valerie Williams (BHS) and Trevor Clayson's (FHS) "Mock Trial Classes" will compete against one another, playing various roles as they simulate a real trial on "battery and bullying allegations."
Local attorneys Ann Taylor and Jared Harris volunteered as "attorney coaches" preparing the students for the competition.
Southeast Idaho residents Â Stacy Stutts, a freelance film producer formerly with CNN and Al Jazeera, and brothers Jonas and Ivan Marcinko recently attended and filmed a project called Wings of Kilimanjaro. Â
This took place on Feb. 5 on the African mountain itself.
Stacy, Jonas and Ivan, along with a group of 95 paragliders from 27 different countries and a crew of over 750 guides and porters ,ascended â€˜Kiliâ€™ as the locals sometimes call it, to cover the story.
The Idaho contingent was there to cover the extreme event. The goal was to launch the biggest paragliding event to date.
Brady Kent Findlay, 24, of Idaho Falls, passed away Tuesday, Feb. 19, 2013 at the Eastern Idaho Regional Medical Center in Idaho Falls.
He was born July 2, 1988 in Salt Lake City, Utah, to Kent George and Kimmra Ann Nugent Findlay.Â Brady was raised in Springfield and attended school in Aberdeen, graduating from Aberdeen High School in 2006.Â Following graduation he attended Idaho State University, studying Computer Science and earned an associate's degree.Â Brady has also lived in Pocatello and was currently living in Idaho Falls.
Brady was engaged to Ashli Anne Boone.
Lida Hale, 97, of Pingree passed away Wednesday, Feb. 20, 2013 at The Emerald House in Blackfoot, from causes incident to age.
Lida was born Nov. 28, 1915 in Thomas to Jacob L. VanOrden and Wilhelmina Steubesand.Â She was raised in Thomas and graduated from Thomas High School in 1933.Â She then attended Idaho State University in Pocatello and studied Home Economics.
On Nov. 28, 1934 Lida married Calvin Leroy Hale in the Salt Lake LDS Temple.Â
Justine Batt, 56, of Fort Hall passed away Friday, Feb. 22, 2013 at the Fort Hall Elderly Complex in Fort Hall.
Justine was born Oct. 6, 1956 in Pocatello to Robert Batt and Freda George.Â She was raised and received her education in Fort Hall.
She enjoyed beading, cooking, watching horror movies, going to the casino, arts and crafts, drawing, crocheting and knitting.
Â She was employed at 4 Directions as an assistant cook and a cook at Elderly Nutrition.Â She also worked in the potato fields.
Marcene Edith Hulse, 69, of Blackfoot, passed away on Saturday, Feb. 23, 2013 at Eastern Idaho Regional Medical Center.Â
Marcene was born on Sept. 2, 1943 in Shelley to Devon Hyrum and Edith Morris Fowler.Â She was raised primarily in the Blackfoot area and attended schools in Blackfoot and Ashton.Â
On Sept. 13, 1962 Marcene was married to Ralph Hulse in Blackfoot.Â Their union was solemnized in the Idaho Falls LDS temple in 1966. Ralph preceded Marcene in death on Feb. 21, 2012.Â
Cecelia Gertrude Vogt, 88, of Blackfoot passed away Sunday, Feb. 24, 2013 at Bingham Memorial Hospital in Blackfoot.
She was born July 16, 1924 in Blackfoot, the daughter of Marcus Blenkle and Anna Arvish.
Cecilia attended schools in Blackfoot through the 10th grade
On Oct. 19, 1947, she married Joseph Vogt in San Francisco, Calif.Â He preceded her in death on July 30, 1995.
She returned to Blackfoot in 1963 where she has resided since.Â She was a parishioner of the Roman Catholic Church.
