Gay Peterslie, 93

March 27, 2013

Gay Peterslie, 93, of Idaho Falls passed away March 24, 2013 at Life Care Center.
She was born on April 18, 1919 to Willard and jeannette Morgan in Shelton. Her early years were spent in Pocatello.
After her father's death in 1932, she and her brother, Verle Morgan, moved with their mother to Shelley.
She graduated from Shelley High School and married Max Kelsey in 1937. The resided on a farm southwest of Shelley where their four children were born and raised. In 1989, they relocated to Idaho Falls.

BLACKFOOT — It has been nearly five years since some friends saw a need to help hungry people in the community and put together the Community Dinner Table.
On Tuesday, members of the Christ's Cowboy Country Church served the final Community Dinner Table of the 2012-2013 year. The first on Oct. 28, 2008, drew just 92 participants. There were well over 300 this time around.
"We've served 23 meals over each winter for the past five years," said Elizabeth Fields, one of the officers in the non-profit organization. That has totaled over 31,500 since that first one.

Russets win rain shortened game with Cougars 7-4

FIRTH — The Firth Cougars welcomed next door neighbor Shelley to town on Tuesday afternoon for a game of hardball that eventually was won by the Russets 7-4 in a game that was called after five innings of play due to the muddy conditions.
"It went down hill fast and it got pretty sloppy out here and when the ball gets wet like this, it's hard for any pitcher to get a good grip and that's what happens when it just keeps raining," Shelley head coach Trent Armstrong said. "I give the kids credit though. They were able to stick it out and just keep trying."

BURGLARY: March 7, 6:52 p.m.: A caller said three checks totaling $1250 were taken from the business' drop box on Sunday.

NO AIR: March 8, 12:56 a.m.: A man said someone let the air out of all four of his tires.

BEER THEFT: March 8, 5:43 p.m.: A caller at the Short Stop reported the theft of a case of beer. An arrest was made.

A BAD FEELING: March 9, 3:17 a.m.: A woman said she hasn't seen her nephew, but has a feeling that he is there. An arrest was made.

Cristel Handly, 70

March 26, 2013

Cristel Handly, 70, of Phoenix, Ariz., passed away on March 14, 2013. She died peacefully at her home. Her trial with ovarian cancer lasted over three years.
Cristel grew up in Shelley where she was born Sept. 9, 1942. She raised her family in Phoenix. After her children were grown she "snow-birded" summers in a home built near where she grew up. She loved being near her siblings.
Cristel was known for her can-do attitude, the principles of work she taught to her children, and a hospitable generosity.

Welland Andrew Hansen, 86

Welland Andrew Hansen, 86, of Blackfoot, Idaho passed away peacefully on Wednesday, March 20, 2013 at Bingham Memorial Hospital
            Welland “Rusty” was born July 27, 1926 in Newton, Utah, to Andrew Lester and Anna Kropfli Hansen.  When he was two years old his parents purchased a farm and moved to Bancroft, Idaho.  He grew up with his younger brother, Jim and Marguerite “Mig”, an aunt four years older than him who he considered his sister.  They were a close-knit family who shared the joys and struggles of farm life.  He graduated from North Gem High School in 1944.

Candidates file for election

BLACKFOOT — Former superintendent Dewane Wren is challenging Peter Lipovac for one of the three Blackfoot School Board trustee positions which will be decided in May. They are facing off in Zone 1. In Zone 3 Lori Kitzmiller is challenging longtime trustee Mary Jo Marlow. Derek Preece has filed to replace Dr. Taylor Johansen in Zone 3. No one else filed to run for that seat. Johansen announced recently that he would not run again.

Preparedness fair held in Shelley

SHELLEY – In case of an emergency, people are advised “be prepared to improvise and use what you have on hand to make it on your own for at least three days, maybe longer.”
Think of your family’s special needs and prepare accordingly.
Classes and vendors were on hand to help people prepare for a variety of emergency situations at the Shelley-Firth Preparedness Fair on Saturday.
Physician Assistant Wade Christensen gave tips about preparing for a medical emergency. This could include taking a trip or hiking into the back country.

It's official: Canvass shows all levies in county passed

It's official. All supplemental levies in Bingham County passed.
The canvass of the March 12, 2013, supplemental levies was approved by the Bingham County Commissioners on Thursday.
In Aberdeen School District No. 58, electors approved the supplemental levy of $675,000 for one year. The votes in favor of were 200 or 66.0 percent with 138 votes or 45.5 percent against.
The percentage of all registered voters who voted in the Aberdeen election was 25.12 percent.
No voters in Bingham County voted in the election for the supplemental levy in the Bonneville Joint School District No. 93.

Stalker students duct tape teachers to wall

The squeals and giggles coming from Stalker Elementary School could probably be heard from miles around as students had the rare opportunity to duct tape their teachers to the gym wall during a special assembly Friday afternoon.
According to PTA president Jenny Wells, the students earned the opportunity to duct tape their teachers for "having 100 percent student participation and raising over $6,000 in the dance-a-thon fundraiser at the school on March 11."
As an incentive to bring in more money, the students earned one yard of duct tape for every $25 earned for the fundraiser.
