Blackfoot reading program begins

BLACKFOOT—With orange highway cones in place and librarians dressed as construction workers, the library was bustling with parents and children Wednesday afternoon for the first day of the summer reading program - "Dig Into Reading at Blackfoot Public Library."
The fun, 'construction themed' program will keep kids busy through July with activities and the opportunity to win prizes by reading books.

Top talent headlines 2013 Chukars roster

IDAHO FALLS — The 2013 Idaho Falls Chukars are celebrating the 75th year of professional baseball in Idaho Falls, the bream is also looking to make it's first legitimate run at a Pioneer League title since the 2008 season.
With the a little help from the parent club, the Kansas City Royals, some big name prospects will be spending at least part of the summer in Idaho Falls.

Music in the Park tradition returns

BLACKFOOT — ”Music in the Park,” a summertime tradition of free concerts started by Blackfoot’s late city councilman Butch Hulse, will continue this summer. Local musician Doug Wareing, who directs “Jazz House Big Band”has taken over the concert series, carrying on the tradition that Hulse started four years ago. “The BinghamMemorial Hospitalboard of directors and administrators have graciously stepped up again this year as the major sponsor of the event,” Wareing said. The Bengals rewrote the softball record books during the season and stamped their mark in Big Sky Conference history.

Relay For Life a success

BLACKFOOT—While the main "Relay For Life" event is over until next year, donations for the annual American Cancer Society fundraiser will be accepted until Aug. 31.
With a hefty goal of $150,000 - hundreds of participants, volunteers and spectators showed up for the all-night event at Blackfoot High School last weekend to help raise money and to honor and remember cancer victims.
Although the event did fall short of raising $150,000, organizers say it was still a "great success" and that it's not too late to donate.

Men's health seminar comes to Blackfoot

BLACKFOOT — A men’s health seminar will be held at the Blackfoot Elks Lodge (123 N. Ash) Wednesday, giving men the opportunity to “talk about what’s really ailing them.” Urologists Albert Corica and Peter Jones from Portneuf Medical Center (PMC) will be hosting the free event. “Discussing urology issues and sexual health can be difficult, but is important for men to understand that certain urological issues might be
a warning sign of other, more significant health concerns,” said Corica.

Blackfoot swept by Jackson Hole

BLACKFOOT — One thing can be said about the American Legion baseball season, it's a grind.
Teams pack 40-plus games into a two month window and a lot of things can happen and usually do.
Coming into Monday's doubleheader with Jackson Hole, the Blackfoot Broncos had been playing some really good baseball holding an 8-2 record.
With so many games compressed into a short time frame, bad games will come. The Broncos had theirs Monday.

Commissioners discuss solid waste shortfall

Taxes or fees may increase to help cover a possible shortfall in the cost of taking care of municipal solid waste.
That's what mayors from Blackfoot and Aberdeen and other interested representatives heard during a hearing with the Bingham County commissioners on Monday.
"It is anticipated there will be a $250,000 shortfall at the end of fiscal year 2013," said David Babbitt, Bingham County Public Works Director.
The fiscal year goes from Oct. 1 to Sept. 30 each year. The taxable year goes from Jan. 1 through Dec. 30.
