Local woman opens dessert shop

Blackfoot has become a sweeter place with the opening of the custom cake and dessert shop "Paisley Cakes." Businesswoman and baker Lanae Lott Workman opened the shop adjacent to the Tesoro gas station on Airport Road.
Workman, a native of Blackfoot, said she has had a passion for baking and creating desserts since she was a child baking small treats in her Easy Bake Oven.
"I've spent hours decorating cakes and perfecting desserts. Desserts have always been my destiny," she said.

Blackfoot council approves budget

The Blackfoot City Council unanimously approved the city's 2013-2014 Fiscal Year Budget for $15,481,568 during a brief meeting at Blackfoot City Hall Thursday evening.
The meeting was to be a public hearing for anyone to express opposition to the proposed budget; however, out of a handful of interested patrons who showed up for the meeting, no one objected to anything on the budget.
Blackfoot Mayor Mike Virtue thanked the council and the city's department managers for "being reasonable and patient and contributing positively to the budget."

POCATELLO — When the Idaho State soccer team left the pitch of Davis Field last week after a 2-0 win over Salt Lake Community College, head coach Allison Gibson said her team was still a long ways away from being ready for the beginning of the season.

Blackfoot motorcyclist injured in crash

Idaho State Police say a Blackfoot motorcyclist was injured in a one-vehicle crash on Tuesday.
According to the ISP report, Jimmie Moss, 35, was traveling northbound on Interstate 15 about 10:15 a.m. when he lost control of his Yamaha motorcycle and crashed in the lane of travel.
Moss was transported by air ambulance to Portneuf Regional Medical Center in Pocatello.  He was not wearing a helmet at the time of the crash.
The lanes of travel were blocked for approximately 1 1/2  hours for the crash investigation.

Madison Kaye “Maddie” Bartausky, 20, of Blackfoot passed away Saturday, Aug. 17, 2013 of injuries sustained in an automobile accident.
She was born Aug. 12, 1993 to Frank John Bartausky and Diane Marie Surdam in Blackfoot.

Man injured in truck-wheelchair collision

Idaho State Police reported that a 72-year-old man was injured when his electric wheelchair was involved in a collision with a pickup truck on Monday morning.
U.S. Highway 91, also known as NW Main Street, was blocked near the Idaho Potato Museum for approximately three hours while authorities investigated.

Fort Hall, others send firefighters to Hailey

BOISE (AP) — Fire managers expressed optimism Sunday in their battle against a wildfire that has scorched nearly 160 square miles and forced the evacuation of 2,300 homes near the central Idaho resort communities of Ketchum and Sun Valley.
Officials said the blaze had grown by only about 12 square miles because of cloud cover the day before and the arrival of additional crews and equipment. Many firefighters worked Sunday to create protective firebreaks, or gaps in vegetation.

BLACKFOOT — It's amazing what history can be gained by comparing photos.
Two four-foot by five-foot photos compare aerial views of Blackfoot. One photo was taken in 1961 or 1962. The second photo was taken by pilot Nyle Tanner in 2012.
Taking a copy of the 1961 photo with him, Tanner was able to photograph Blackfoot and the area around it from the same angle.
The bridges over the interstate can be identified in 1961 but there is no interstate. The Snake River also flowed on the west side of what would become the interstate.

Duffin named Tigers head coach

ABERDEEN — It has been a wild week for the Aberdeen High School football team.
First head coach Cory Hollingsworth resigned last Wednesday to take a teaching and coaching job in Oregon and defensive coordinator Derek Jolley was named interim head coach.
Practice opened for the team on Monday, two days later athletic director Cody Park named Jeff Duffin the teams new head coach.
