Ruth Marcum, 89

September 11, 2013

Ruth Marcum, 89, of Rexburg and formerly of Blackfoot passed away Monday, Sept. 9, 2013 at her home surrounded by her family.
She was born in Victor on March 8, 1924 to Ulysses Grant Daniels and Delilah Wardle Daniels.
 She was raised and attended school in Victor and Jackson Hole, Wyo.  She graduated from Victor High School, attended Ricks College and Idaho State University receiving her bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education.  She taught school in Teton Valley and the Snake River School District for 25 years.

Broncos, Grizzlies play to a draw

BLACKFOOT — Three weeks ago the Blackfoot and Skyline boys soccer teams took to the pitch of the Idaho Falls Soccer Complex and for 75 plus minutes battled to a 2-2 tie.
But a late Skyline foul set up the Broncos with a penalty kick, which won the game for Blackfoot 3-2.

Support Special Olympics Saturday

Maverik employees, law enforcement officers and military personnel from across Idaho are teaming to pump gasoline and wash windshields for customers while collecting donations for Special Olympics Idaho. Fueling Dreams for Special Olympics will take place from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. this Saturday at the Maverik station, 895 W. Bridge St. in Blackfoot.
People can participate in two ways. They can buy icons in Maverik stores through Saturday, Sept. 14, and/or fuel at Maverik on Saturday and Tip the Cop pumping gas.
Law enforcement officers will pump gas and wash windshields for tips.

Fort Hall's Chief Tahgee Elementary has first official day of classes

One hundred and seven elementary students stepped into their sparkling new classrooms for a full a day of school at the new Chief Tahgee Elementary Academy (charter school) on Tuesday.
While the school, consisting of four temporary modular units, opened about a week later than originally scheduled due to some minor glitches, principal Joel Weaver said, "We are officially in and excited to see this school become one of the best schools around."

Update on Two vehicle crash on US HWY 91

SHELLEY— At approximately 3:00 p.m. the Idaho State Police investigated a two vehicle property damage crash at the intersection of US Highway 91 and 1000 North road between Shelley and Firth. Macario Oliva, 57, of Shelly, was traveling south on US Highway 91 in a 1995 GMC Manure truck when he attempted to turn left onto 1000 North road. Douglas Erickson, 59, of Layton, Utah, was also traveling south on US Highway 91 in a 2004 Chevrolet Cavalier. Erickson attempted to pass Oliva in the intersection where he struck the rear of his truck.

Honoring those who were lost in 9/11

IDAHO FALLS — At 6:46 a.m. MST on Wednesday, Sept.
11th, 2013, the local “Bugles Across America” team will play the first round of Taps honoring civilians, veterans and first responders involved in the series of coordinated terrorist attacks upon the United States in New York City and Washington, D.C. on Sept. 11, 2011.
The public is invited to the event at the War Memorial on
the Greenbelt on Memorial Drive (west of the Bonneville County Courthouse).
A bell will be rung at the exact time of each of the crashes (MST), followed by the American Legion

Ardeena Nalder Sasser, 94

September 10, 2013

Ardeena Nalder Sasser, of Pingree, passed away on Sept. 5, 2013.  She was 94 years old. 
Ardeena was born July 29, 1919, the daughter  of Archie and Clara Webb Nalder.  She grew up in Holbrook, attending schools in Holbrook and Kaysville, Utah. 
 She married Blaine Sasser on Christmas day 1936 and they were later sealed in the Idaho Falls LDS Temple.  She and Blaine settled the family farm in Pingree, where she has lived  for the past 74 years.

Conner Allen Covington, 4

Our sweet little Conner returned home to his Heavenly Father on Saturday, Sept. 7, 2013 after a tragic accident.
 Conner was a special boy with a pure heart who loved his family.  He loved to play with his brothers.  Together they would jump on the tramp, throw footballs, play Mario Brothers, ride the four-wheeler, draw pictures, pop popcorn and watch movies.  He loved dinosaurs, trains, Spiderman and rainbows.  Conner was especially excited about the go-cart his dad just built for him.

Joseph T. Baldree, 93

Joseph Timothy Baldree Jr, 93, of Blackfoot, passed away Friday, Sept. 6, 2013 at the Bingham Memorial Hospital.
He was born Sept. 7, 1919 in Farmville, North Carolina, to Joseph Timothy and Nancy Horton Joyner Baldree.  Joe was raised and attended school in Farmville, North Carolina.  He has lived in various places in North Carolina, Blackfoot and Salmon.
Joe enlisted in the Army in 1943, during World War II with 5 children at home, he served in Rhineland, Northern France and Normandy Beach.  He was honorably discharged in 1945 after being wounded.

Demolition derby brings EISF to an end

BLACKFOOT—The sound and smell of revving engines filled the air Saturday night at the Eastern Idaho State Fair [EISF] Grandstand Arena during the infamous Demolition Derby.
"I've been coming to the derby since I was three years old; it's in my blood," said Dakota Chavez of American Falls.
This year officials added two events to the traditional lists of divisions, including the truck and the figure eight division. Because a truck division was added, there were also k-rails set up a few feet from the grandstand walls as a safety precaution.
