Despite pesky storms, Fair has record year

Despite pesky storms on and off throughout the week, officials at the Eastern Idaho State Fair (EISF) are celebrating record-breaking attendance.
EISF manager Brandon Bird said that rainstorms early in the week slowed attendance; however, the fair finished strong with sold-out grandstand shows country star Chris Young on Thursday, Celebrity Apprentice winner/country star Trace Adkins on Friday the ever popular Demolition Derby on Saturday.
"The concerts were the best ever. Amazing entertainers." said Angie Wheeler of Pocatello. "I'd go see them both again anytime."

Fort Hall woman crowned Miss Indian Nation

The Shoshone-Bannock Tribes and residents across Idaho have reason to be proud of Fort Hall native Alexandria Alvarez, 25, who was crowned Miss Indian Nations XXI in Bismarck, North Dakota on Saturday.
The "Miss Indian Nations" is a nationwide pageant hosted by the the United Tribes Technical College in Bismarck and is an ambassador leadership program created to promote goodwill and representation of all Native tribes and nations throughout the United States and Canada.
This is Alvarez's second attempt at winning the title.

Local sportscaster known for his flashy pants

POCATELLO—Two years ago, when KPVI News 6 sports director Matt Gittins posted a picture of himself on Facebook wearing a pair of ugly, green bowling pants from his high school days, he had no idea of the adamant reaction he would receive from the station's viewers. Since then he has stepped it up by wearing much "fancier" pants that have now become his "signature look" in East Idaho.

Child dies in accident

A 4-year-old boy from Blackfoot is dead after being struck by a car on Saturday.
According to Bingham County Sheriff Craig Rowland, the accident took place during a youth football game at Snake River High School about 5:30 p.m. Conner Covington was playing on the east side of the fence. when a woman driving a SUV prepared to leave, Rowland said the boy darted in front of the vehicle and was run over.
The child was taken to Bingham Memorial Hospital where he was pronounced dead.
Rowland said the investigation into the accident is continuing.

Hatchery one step in bringing sockeye back

Collaboration and “we have a lot more work to do” were the two points consistently made Friday at the dedication of the Springfield Hatchery.
“This is an important next step in a very important resource,” said Ed Schriever, Idaho Department Fish & Game Fisheries bureau chief. “This is the largest success story in recovery of an animal from Lonesome Larry to where we are now.
“We are not just about raising fish,” he said. “This is magical but it’s not magic.”
 “There’s science behind this,” said Schriever. “Genetic analysis is used for the maximum amount of production.”

Community rallies for missionary's family

Prayers, kind words and financial donations have been pouring in from people of all faiths from around the world, for the family of Elder Taylor Ward of Vacaville, Calif. He is the LDS missionary who died from injuries received in a car accident near Rockford on Tuesday evening. An online fundraising effort is underway to help Ward's family with funeral expenses and the cost of transporting his body back to California.

Snake River gets win over Star Valley

THOMAS — Quarterback Kade Keller scored on a pair of 7-yard runs and Brad Coombs had a 1-yard plunge as Snake River defeated Star Valley, Wyo., 22-19 in non-conference football on Friday.
Keller's second score came with 11:31 left in the fourth quarter. The Panther defense, led by Coombs, held off the Braves fourth times thereafter.
"Star Valley has had our number the last couple of years," said Panther coach Jeff Dalley. "Early on tonight we got some turnovers and had some momentum."
The Panther win broke a three-game win streak for the Braves in the series.

Shelley topples Jerome 28-7

SHELLEY - Coming off of a undefeated season capped with a State Championship the Russets hosted the 4A Jerome Tigers in their first home game of the season.
After a slow start the Russets scored twenty one in the second half to cruise to a solid 28-7 victory.

Skyline downs Blackfoot in 2OT

IDAHO FALLS — With a seven point lead and a little more than two minutes remaining in the game the Blackfoot defense had Skyline in a fourth and nine situation at the Broncos 39 yard line.

Charismatic country star a hit with EISF audience

Ominous storm clouds loomed over the Eastern Idaho State Fair Grounds Thursday evening threatening the first grandstand concert of the week featuring country star Chris Young. Thankfully, the only thunder was the thunderous applause and the roar of the crowd from the near sold out audience who came for the concert.
