Lady Cougars win district title

FIRTH — Firth head coach Carla reeves got quite the birthday present Thursday night from her Lady Cougars volleyball team, a 3A Nuclear Conference championship.
The Lady Cougars took down North Fremont in straight sets 25-14, 25-17, 25-14 to claim the district title and the berth in next week’s state tournament.
“It was a phenomenal season,” Reeves said. “The entire tournament we only lost one set.”
After the trophy was handed out the entire crowd sang happy birthday to Reeves.
“The team told me that they won the title for me,” Reeves said.

Fifth District champions

AMERICAN FALLS — The Snake River Lady Panthers volleyball team celebrates its 3A Fifth District championship
after taking down Bear Lake 25-12, 25-9, 25-19 at American Falls High School on
Thursday. “I was pleased. So pleased,” Snake River head coach Shelli Van Orden said.
“We played consistent. It wasn’t drop a set , then kill a team. ... All the scores were right
where we thought they’d be.” The Lady Panthers open State tournament play on Nov. 1
at 8 a.m. against the third place team from District 3.

Candidates questioned at forum

BLACKFOOT — All six Blackfoot mayoral candidates and seven candidates for the four councilman positions took part in the forum at the American Legion on Thursday.
Each candidate was given five minutes to introduce himself or herself and then questions were taken from the audience.
The mayoral candidates are Carlos Mercado, Dan Cravens, Paul Loomis, Carlos Martinez, John Hobbler and Rick Bigler.
Running for the Blackfoot City Council are:
Seat 1-Ken Ashcraft, Andy Hasselbring and Chris Jensen, who is the incumbent.
Seat 2-Layne (Skip) Gardner
Seat 3-Bart Brown

Russets rout Teton, win district title

SHELLEY — Shelley senior quarterback Kaden Schmitt has been a key component for the Russets offense all season long.
Thursday night on senior night and the Mountain Rivers Conference title on the line Schmitt played one of his best games of the season throwing for 346 yards and four touchdowns and running for 102 yards and two more touchdowns as Shelley routed Teton 42-29 at Shelley High School.

Blackfoot Community Center co-founder receives award

Ashlee Howell, a co-founder of the Blackfoot Community Center, received the Extraordinary Under 40 award at the Idaho State Journal's Business & Achievement Awards on Wednesday.
"Lots of days I don't feel extraordinary," Howell said as she thanked her husband, Casey, and their four children for their support.
"I wish there could be two names on this plaque," Howell said, recognizing co-founder Sandra Weston.
Howell and Weston founder the center in 2007. It now serves over 400 children in the Blackfoot area.

Lady Broncos looking to make a statement

BLACKFOOT — When first year head coach Alisha Yeates and her team talked prior to the 2013 season, the team set the goal to just improve over last season.
But when the season was all said and done the Lady Broncos had a little more success than anyone in District 5/6 was expecting.

Local coat drive best year yet

BLACKFOOT — No one in Bingham County should have to go without a warm coat this year thanks to the success of the 6th annual 'coat drive' spearheaded by Blackfoot's "Bingham County Chiropractic." Organizers wrapped up the coat drive on Tuesday calling it "the most successful one yet."
"This was a great coat drive, better than years past," said Cari Garrett, office manager of Bingham County Chiropractic. "More businesses participated this year and we've received hundreds of clean, gently used coats and jackets."

Panthers, Cougars reach district title games

AMERICAN FALLS — Over the past three years the Snake River High School volleyball team has established its dominance over the rest of the competition in the 3A Fifth District.
The Lady Panthers have been crowned district champions in each season earning the automatic state tournament berth that comes with it.
Tuesday at American Falls High School the Lady Panthers began their quest for a fourth consecutive district title with a straight set win over Bear Lake 25-17, 25-15, 25-8.

ISP finds 6 lbs of suspected marijuana

AMERICAN FALLS— On October 22nd at approximately 2:40pm, Idaho State Police conducted a traffic stop on a 2007 Chrysler Town and Country van, on Interstate 86 near milepost 29, near American Falls in Power County, Idaho.
The vehicle was traveling east and was stopped for a traffic violation. The driver was identified as 26 year old Michael Torgerson, from Leeds, North Dakota.
Pursuant to the traffic stop, 6 pounds of suspected marijuana was found and seized.

Fort Hall Police Department escapee found

FORT HALL— Fort Hall inmate Nathaniel Yabenay was captured by Bannock deputies on Vaughn street near a rest home in Pocatello on Oct 21 at 9:30 p.m..
Find out more information regarding the capture and collaboration of both departments in pursuing federal charges against Yabenay for his escape from lawful custody in tomorrow's paper.
