February 26th
Marcene Edith Hulse, 69, of Blackfoot, passed away on Saturday, Feb. 23, 2013 at Eastern Idaho Regional Medical Center.Â
Marcene was born on Sept. 2, 1943 in Shelley to Devon Hyrum and Edith Morris Fowler. She was raised primarily in the Blackfoot area and attended schools in Blackfoot and Ashton.Â
On Sept. 13, 1962 Marcene was married to Ralph Hulse in Blackfoot. Their union was solemnized in the Idaho Falls LDS temple in 1966. Ralph preceded Marcene in death on Feb. 21, 2012.Â
Cecelia Gertrude Vogt, 88, of Blackfoot passed away Sunday, Feb. 24, 2013 at Bingham Memorial Hospital in Blackfoot.
She was born July 16, 1924 in Blackfoot, the daughter of Marcus Blenkle and Anna Arvish.
Cecilia attended schools in Blackfoot through the 10th grade
On Oct. 19, 1947, she married Joseph Vogt in San Francisco, Calif. He preceded her in death on July 30, 1995.
She returned to Blackfoot in 1963 where she has resided since. She was a parishioner of the Roman Catholic Church.
February 25th
Nonpareil Farms has publicly confirmed its intent to sell its dehydrated potato business in Blackfoot to Basic American Foods. Employees at the companies were informed of the plans last week.
February 24th
Four school districts in Bingham County are asking voters to approve supplemental levies for their districts.
The school districts are Blackfoot 55, Snake River 52, Aberdeen 58 and Bonneville Joint 93.
° Blackfoot School District 55 is asking voters to approve a $1,975,000 supplemental levy for each of two years. The total cost of this levy over two years is $3,950,000.
° Snake River School District 52 is asking approval of a $900,000 supplemental levy for each of two years. The total cost of this levy over two years is $1,800,000.
Former CIA officer L. Larry Boothe told Republicans at Saturday's Lincoln Day luncheon the importance of that agency.
"The CIA is vital to the security in this nation," Boothe said. "The CIA is the nation's first line of defense."
He told of his involvement in the covert war against Russia in Afghanistan in the 1980s and touched on some controversies the agency is dealing with today.
"I think it's a mistake," Boothe said of President Obama's abolishment of enhanced interrogation methods. He noted that those methods produced information vital in the battle against terrorism.
February 23rd
POCATELLO — Bingham County wrestlers had 15 chances at individual state titles entering Saturday's portion of the 2013 State Wrestling Championships. By days end, three stood above the rest as Treyton Nilsson, Jacob Frost and Luke Madsen each won state titles in their respective weight classes.
Nilsson started the finals action off with a bang as he took on Bubba Boots of South Fremont in a rematch of the Tiger-Grizz final a little more than a month previous.
At the Tiger-Grizz Nilsson built a big lead only to fall late in the third round. On Saturday, Nilsson reversed that with a thrilling 4-2 win.
"I was trying not to go as hard as I possibly could in the first round this time, instead I was trying to even it out because I'm not too good on my stamina," Nilsson said. "It was great, you can't really describe the feeling of winning."
February 22nd
POCATELLO — The states finest wrestlers descend upon Idaho State University's Holt Arena on Friday with each of them dreaming of glory and an individual state championship as they began the two day tournament.
Amid them were Bingham Counties best as Blackfoot, Snake River, Shelley, Firth and Aberdeen each sent a contingent into the fray. At days end, Bingham County had represented themselves quite well thank you as the five schools combined to send fifteen wrestlers into today's semifinals and in so doing, assuring themselves no worse than sixth place medals for their efforts.

GUM THEFT: Feb. 6, 12:41 p.m.: A caller at the Short Stop reported the theft of five packs of gum. A citation was given.
THEFT: Feb. 6, 1:16 p.m.: A caller reported $50 stolen.
WELFARE CHECK: Feb. 6, 5:32 p.m.: A caller at Taco Bell said a female is beating a child in a vehicle.
CAR VS GARAGE: Feb. 8, 10:28 a.m.: A caller said a woman just crashed into the garage and appears to be stuck in her vehicle.
February 21st
Snake River School Board trustees approved a declaration of candidacy for three school board positions during their meeting at Rockford Elementary on Wednesday.
The positions open are in Zones 1, 4 and 5.
Zone 1 is in the Pingree-Rockford area. Annis Williams was appointed to complete Julie VanOrden’s term. Williams has the option to run for this seat in the May election.
Korden Wray represents Zone 4 in the Riverside area. Wray stated he would not run for reelection.
Steve Reader represents Zone 5 in the Moreland area.
February 20th
Superintendent Mark Gabrylczyk presented the need of passage of the supplemental levy in the Snake River School District to board trustees on Wednesday.
"In the past few years, the Snake River School District has received $1.1 million less from the legislature," he said.
Snake River is not the only school district that has suffered financially.
"Eighty-five out of the 115 school districts in Idaho have supplemental levies," Gabrylczyk said.
The requested $900,000 supplemental levy, if passed, will be used for current infrastructure in the school district, he said.
