New surgery available at BMH

POCATELLO – A new surgery to help patients with chronic reflux disease is available exclusively at Bingham Memorial Hospital in Blackfoot.
"Chronic reflux disease, heartburn and Barrett's esophagus has been my passion for 30 years," said surgeon Kurt Birkenhagen. He has offices in In Blackfoot and Pocatello.
Birkenhagen's interest is not only professional but also personal. He has personally suffered from chronic acid reflux, heartburn and Barrett's esophagus.

Blackfoot beats Hillcrest 4-2

AMMON — You will have to excuse the Blackfoot Lady Broncos softball squad if they weren't just a little bit overanxious to play some ball on Monday. Due to weather and the schedule it had been ten days since they last set foot on the diamond as they traveled to Hillcrest for a make up game at the Lady Knights home field.
By days end Blackfoot doubled up the home team in a 4-2 win to run the season record to a most impressive 12-1.

TAPE RECORDING: March 24, 7:08 p.m.: A woman said she has a tape recording that she needs an officer to listen to.

GAS CAPS: March 24, 9:41 a.m.: A caller at Pratt Truck Service said several vehicles are missing the gas caps.

FAKE COINS: March 25, 1:36 p.m.: A man said he bought coins at an auction and found out that they are counterfeit when he took them to be appraised.

BREAK-IN: March 26, 6:27 p.m.: A man said someone has broken into his house but he has not noticed anything missing.

Despite Friday's pesky rain and wind, the Blackfoot High School prom and the festivities surrounding it went perfectly for Rachael Slay, her date Nathaniel Stansfield and a group of friends, who arrived at the prom like royalty in the luxury of shiny,10-seat limousine with leather interior.

Broncos run winning streak to nine in 10-0 win at Shelley

SHELLEY — The Blackfoot Broncos ran their winning streak to nine on Saturday as they danced amidst the raindrops at Shelley High School for a 10-0 victory.
The game was a classic pitchers duel through the first five innings as Dylan Mansanarez and Tyler Bean locked horns on the bump. A lone Blackfoot run in the top of the third inning was the difference through five as the two teams headed to the sixth inning with Blackfoot leading 1-0.

Full Throttle Rodeo

POCATELLO — On a cold and rainy evening the fourth district high school rodeo resumed their 2013 season as they took to the indoor arena at the Bannock County Fairgrounds for rodeo three of the 12 rodeo season.
In the barrel racing it was all Timmi "Full Throttle" Hutchings as the Snake River freshman blistered the course with a winning time of 15.748. Hutchings was the only sub sixteen second ride of the evening as Cassidey Quinn and Kassidy Duffin came in second and third with times of 16.143 and 16.217.

Community steps up with donations for injured puppy

The community has generously stepped up to help cover the medical costs of Muffin, the 12-week-old Cocker spaniel who was flung out of a moving vehicle two weeks ago.
Marcia Williams, vice-president of the Bingham County Humane Society, said she was contacted by a woman who witnessed the puppy being thrown out the window in the midst of what appeared to be a domestic dispute going on between a couple in the vehicle ahead of her on the highway between Blackfoot and Fort Hall.

Friends of Blackfoot Library to conduct book sale on Saturday

The spring book sale is scheduled from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. this Saturday in the basement of the Blackfoot Library.
Sponsored by Friends of the Blackfoot Library, the money raised goes to support projects in the library, said book sale co-chair Venita Fankhauser.
"We purchased a machine that buffs CDs and DVDs," she said.
"We will also partner with the library for a "Let's Talk About It," seminar that starts in January," said Fankhauser. "It depends if the library receives a grant for this program.

Nine run sixth inning lifts Lady Panthers to victory over Lady Dragons

RIVERSIDE — The Snake River Lady Panthers got a nine run sixth inning and Erica Ramirez worked her way out of a bases loaded jam in the seventh as the Lady Panthers won their fifth straight game with a 9-4 non-conference victory over the Malad Lady Dragons on Thursday afternoon.
"We're on a bit of a roll so we like that," Snake River head coach Kay Martin said. "The girls were having fun. They didn't get really down and it was definitely hard to keep up when they were hitting the ball hard and not really getting any hits out of it. Malad has a pretty good team though so we feel good about it."

Fairy tale evening awaits local autistic girl heading to BHS prom

Thanks to the kindness and generosity of the community and one special young man, a night fit for a princess awaits Rachael Slay, a senior at Blackfoot High School with non-speaking autism, as she prepares to attend the BHS prom on Friday night.
A few weeks ago, Rachael's mother, Serrina Slay, used social media and the assistance of the Morning News in hope of finding her only child, Rachael, a date to the prom saying, "She [Rachael] has never gone to a school dance or any school function and I would love for her to have this one last opportunity to go to the Blackfoot High School prom."
