Stalker students, parents have GRRReat night

Students at Stalker Elementary School had a GRRRReat time checking out real bearskins and listening to Jennifer Jackson, Idaho Fish & Game Regional Conservation Educator, talk about Idaho bears Wednesday evening. It was all part of the school's bear-themed 'Family Reading Night' where students and their families enjoyed a free dinner, read books, played games and learned all about bears at various 'bear dens' set up throughout the school.

Lady Broncos sweep Lady Bobcats 5-3, 9-3.

BLACKFOOT — The Blackfoot softball squad took to the home field for the first time this season as they welcomed 5A Madison to town for a double dip on the diamond. By evenings end, the Lady Broncos remained unbeaten on the young season as they ran their record to 4-0 with a sweep of the Lady Bobcats 5-3 in game one and then 9-3 in the nightcap.

Lady Panthers pull out 7-6 win over Lady Cardinals

RIVERSIDE — With the score tied 6-6 heading into the bottom half of the seventh inning the Snake River Lady Panthers got two very big swings. Alyssa Delaney started the inning with a drive to deep center field for a lead off triple. Moments later, Raegan Martin crushed a shot to centerfield and although it was caught, it was more than deep enough to drive in Delaney with the winning run as Snake River downed Soda Springs 7-6 in non-conference action.

Struhs sentenced for vehicular manslaughter

BLACKFOOT — Kenny Carl Struhs, age 42, was sentenced for vehicular manslaughter Tuesday by Seventh Judicial District Judge Darren Simpson.
Struhs was sentenced to be incarcerated for 10 years fixed and 5 years indeterminate, "that is not less than 10 years and not more than 15 years," Simpson said. Struhs was credited with 222 days for time served.
Struhs was fined $2,500 and $285.50 court costs.
On Aug. 2, 2012, Struhs ran a stop sign on East Harmony and Rich Lane and hit a motorcycle driven by Brent Hansen with his 6-year-old daughter behind him. The motorcycle exploded.

Voters approve supplemental levies

Voters in the Blackfoot, Snake River and Aberdeen school districts approved the supplemental levies their trustees were seeking on Tuesday.

Blackfoot tennis opens season

POCATELLO — The Blackfoot High School tennis squad opened their 2013 season on Tuesday afternoon as they battled with a pair of perennial tennis powers in Century and Wood River.
Playing at Century High School the Broncos more than held their own as the boys team beat Wood River 4-2 and tied Century 3-3. The girls squad also beat Wood River by the tally of 4-2 but they fell to a deep Century squad 1-5.

County receives Humvee from Dept. of Energy

Representatives of the U.S Department of Energy (DOE) delivered an armored, Humvee to the Bingham County Sheriff's Department Tuesday morning. The older but still usable Humvee, a tool for protecting law enforcement officers and security guards in dangerous situations, had been previously used by the Idaho National Laboratory's Protective Force.
According to Rick Provencher, manager of DOE's Idaho Operations Office, the High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicles (HMMWVs), commonly known as 'Humvees' were replaced at the INL recently by the newer-generation BearCat armored vehicles.

Edith M. Jaeger, 86

Edith M. Jaeger, 86, passed away Saturday, March 9, 2013 at the Gables in Blackfoot.
She was born May 26, 1926 in Blackfoot to Nels and Mathilda Johnson, the seventh and last child to join their family.
She graduated from Blackfoot High School and worked on the family farm.  She met Ernest Jaeger at a dance in Firth and they were married Sept. 2, 1949.  It was then that she began her great work in life being a wife and mother.  They have four children, Steven, Karen, Larry and Mary.
She worked for the State Hospital South as a cook until she retired in May of 1988.

Joe Vincent Diaz, 87

Joe Diaz, 87 left this world on March 10, 2013 to join his loving wife Lucy, surrounded by his family at his home on Diaz Lane. 
He was born on Sept. 28, 1925 to Manuel Diaz and Magdalena Vargas in Augusta, Kansas.  At the age of 7, he and his family moved to the Pocatello area where he was raised.  In 1942 he met his life partner and wife of 68 years, Lucy Honena.  They made their home in the Gibson District on the Fort Hall Indian Reservation.

Trial recreation highlights Idaho at 150 activities

Witness Bessie Croshaw (played by Sharon Sturm) reacts as the bailiff (played by Wayne Brower) takes away the prosecution’s exhibit—a skull and a bullet. The re-enactment of this 1887 murder trial will be performed at 10 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. on Thursday, at 1 p.m. and 7 p.m. on Friday and at 11 a.m. on Saturday. Admission is free, reserve tickets are recommended since there is limited seating in the courtroom. Contact Sara Staub at 782-3160 for tickets.
