Broncos send bakers dozen to state, capture 4 district titles

IONA — The Blackfoot Broncos took to the Bonneville mats on Wednesday looking to run their district championship streak to fifteen. Unfortunately the men in black came up short of that team goal as Bonneville captured the team title with 519.5 points while Blackfoot came home with the second place hardware with 409.5 points. Pocatello rounded out the top three with 293 points.
“It was a big day for our kids,” Blackfoot head coach Thain Cashmore said. “They had to go out, put their toes on the line and prove themselves one more time.”

Six BHS musicians earn All-Northwest honors

Six Blackfoot High School (BHS) qualified for All-Northwest. This designation honors outstanding music students from Alaska, idaho, Montana, Oregon, Washington and Wyoming. The 2013 NAtME All-Northwest takes place Feb. 14-17 in Portland, Ore.
The Blackfoot students who qualified are singers Ashley Anderson, Miranda Day, Lillie Wright and Evan Peterson. Participating with the band are Gabe Wistisen, French horn and Dylan Neff, bassoon.
Anderson and Day are sopranos and will sing in the Treble Choir. Wright is an alto; Peterson is a bass. They will perform in the Mixed Choir.

Panthers open conference tournament with win over Beavers

POCATELLO — The Snake River Panthers opened defense of their conference championship on Wednesday evening as the top seeded squad squared off with the American Falls Beavers at Pocatello High School.
The game started in nightmarish fashion for the Panthers as they struggled from the field and the free throw line in the opening stanza as they shot 10 of 19 from the charity stripe and connected on just one shot from the field.
Adding injury to insult was the horrific moment when Brad Coombs laid screaming on the floor with a dislocated toe. Despite the rough beginning however, Snake River showed their depth and talent as they cruised into next Tuesday nights conference championship game with a 63-42 victory.

Broncos comeback for road win at Preston

PRESTON — Make no mistake about it. Blackfoot was in trouble heading into the fourth quarter of their opening round conference tournament game at Preston on Tuesday night. That is until a small defensive shift to a pressure man-to-man look. That subtle adjustment on the defensive end sparked a fourth quarter comeback as the men in black advanced to the right side of the tournament bracket with a hard fought 48-45 victory.
"We just put our emphasis on more pressure in our man defense," Blackfoot head coach Dan Hale said. "We wanted to see how they would react to it and we were able to get into the passing lanes which disrupted what they were trying to do."

Idaho AgCredit donates to Senior Center

Pam Beus, executive director of Bingham County's Senior Citizen Center, was pleased to accept a $2,000 donation from Greg Rose, vice president and branch manager of Idaho AgCredit in Blackfoot on Tuesday.
The funding comes from a charitable program called "Sharing Success" started by CoBank, the bank that funds Idaho AgCredit's loans, and is a part of a $1 million campaign donating to "Feeding America," the nation's leading hunger relief charity.

BHS 'We the People' class wins another state championship

Blackfoot High School students from Holly Kartchner's government class proved their knowledge of the U.S. Constitution, once again by taking first place in the state for the sixth year in a row at the "We the People: The Citizen and the Constitution" mock congressional hearing competition in Boise on Feb. 6.
The class of 20 students is now eligible to to participate in the national "We the People" competition April 25-May 1 in Washington, D.C.

Russets open tournament with win over Teton

IDAHO FALLS — The Shelley Russets got a good view of just what can happen in district tournament play as they watched game one go double overtime before the top seeded Sugar-Salem Diggers finally prevailed over the fourth seeded South Fremont squad.
That eye opener served the Russets well as any thoughts of a Teton upset was quickly dispelled as the Russets rolled throughout the night to a convincing 64-34 victory.

No one injured in I-15 crash

Benjamin Sorensen, 36, of Blackfoot hit the end of a guard rail on the right side of Interstate 15 at milepost 109 on Monday afternoon. He then continued driving south in the burrow pit, aiming to return to the Interstate. Sorensen hit the bridge and had enough momentum to get across the irrigation canal.
When stopped, the pickup was resting on the passenger side, just south of the irrigation canal. The grill of the Chevy pickup was pushed in and the front wheel on the driver's side had come off.

Surrounded by loving family members, Alton James Reay, formerly of Blackfoot, passed away on Jan. 20, 2013, at Providence St Peter Hospital in Olympia, Wash. He will be remembered as a loving and generous husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend.
