Santa's Helpers work at Rupe's

BLACKFOOT — Local law enforcement waited tables at Rupe's Burgers Tuesday night to raise money for the Santa's Helpers program.
All profits and tips made between 5:30 - 8:30 p.m. on Tuesday night go towards the Santa's Helpers program.
"Our goal is to raise $2,000 tonight," said Erin Hidalgo, a dispatch supervisor for Bingham County, who organizes the fundraiser each year.
The Santa's Helpers program, that's coordinated by the Bingham County Dispatch Center, has been helping provide 100 local families a better Christmas each year since 1997.

Firth wins battle of the Cougars

FIRTH — If the first game of the season was any indication the Firth Lady Cougars are going to have quite the 2013-14 season.
Kayla Jensen led four Cougars in double figures with a game-high 24 as Firth rolled to a 71-51 season opening win over South Fremont Tuesday night at Firth High School.

Generation slowpoke? Kids don't run as fast as parents once did, study finds

TODAY—Despite their "pumped up kicks,” kids today aren’t running nearly as fast as their parents did at the same age. In fact, in a one-mile run, youngsters now are about 1.5 minutes slower on those laps than children 30 years ago, according to a new study.

Candidate forums for mayoral elections scheduled

Candidate forums for the upcoming mayoral election between Paul Loomis and Dan Cravens have been scheduled. Loomis and Cravens are facing a runoff election as the top two candidates of six since none of the candidates gained 50 percent (plus one) of the votes needed in the city election on Nov. 5.
-The Blackfoot Chapter of the Freedom First Society will hold the first forum on Thursday from 7-8:30 p.m at Blackfoot City Hall.

BHS yearbook staff creating centennial edition

Blackfoot High School yearbook editor Halle Phillips and advisor Teresa Gallegos enjoy going through old yearbooks and discovering fun, historical facts about the school and the community as they work with new technology to put together a commemorative 100th edition.

The yearbook staff at Blackfoot High School is creating a 100th volume "special edition" of the 2013-2014 publication, one that will be a keepsake for anyone with ties to Blackfoot High School.

Former BHS tight end Josh Hill catches first career NFL touchdown

NEW ORLEANS — Former Blackfoot High School and Idaho State tight end Josh Hill caught his first career NFL touchdown pass Sunday afternoon against the San Francisco 49ers in New Orleans.
Hill hauled in a 3-yard touchdown pass from Drew Brees with 49 seconds left in the first quarter.

Pirates end Cougars season

POCATELLO – Fourth and short, a situation every offensive player wants to succeed in.
Facing a fourth and three from the West Side 12 yard line, the Cougars needed to convert on a short yardage play to continue the drive and possibly clinch a berth in next week’s 2A state title game.
But Cougars senior running back Connor Montgomery’s 35th carry of the game came up one yard short and West Side took over on downs.

Zumbathon raises money for cheerleader

BLACKFOOT— The Zumbathon fundraiser for BHS senior captain cheerleader Margie Catindig raised upwards of $600 to go towards her trip to New York City to perform in the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade.
"I love that our community can come together and for being able to help me be able to achieve something so exciting," said Catindig.
Cheerleading coach Mindi Loosli came up with the idea of a Zumbathon.
