MVMS students get new microscopes

Students at Mountain View Middle School (MVMS) received 30 brand new microscopes for science classes this week, thanks to a grant awarded to the school's Life Science teachers, Eileen Huestis and Alan Southern.
The teachers applied for the grant through the Summer of Innovation Program (part of the NASA Idaho Space Grant Consortium) right before the deadline on Jan. 10 and were thrilled to receive the grant money just four days later.

Russet comeback downs top rank Diggers 48-47

SHELLEY — For three quarter of play the undefeated and top ranked 3A Sugar-Salem Diggers were in control of their game at Shelley High School on Wednesday evening. That was until Shelley senior McKay Cannon decided to take over the contest, putting his team on his back with five fourth quarter three point baskets, including the eventual game winner with :25 remaining.

Community reacts to recall efforts

Community reaction to the news of recall efforts against Blackfoot School District trustees Scott Reese and Jenny Hong has been mixed, with some patrons showing strong support for the school board members.
Start-up recall petitions against the two were turned into the Bingham County Clerk's office late Monday by a local group, "Concerned Citizens of District 55" because of the board's actions regarding former superintendent Scott Crane's $220,000 separation agreement. Scott Bigler, organizer of the group contends that "the community has lost trust in the board."

Relay for Life participants start planning with Hawaiian Luau

It was a festive but emotional evening as volunteers, team participants and cancer survivors gathered at the Meridian Center in Blackfoot Thursday night for a Hawaiian Luau to kick off planning efforts for this year's Bingham County "Relay For Life." The event to be at Blackfoot High School June 14-15.

Author brings anti-bullying message to Snake River

About 600 fifth through eighth graders heard a strong anti-bullying message in the Snake River High School auditorium on Wednesday.
Author Brad Tassell used song, examples and his fictional detective story, "Don't Feed the Bully,"
"Why is it funny when someone hurts him/herself?" Tassell asked.
With the help of his audience, three reasons were determined:
° "Because it's not you," one student answered.
° "It is you; just not at this time," Tassell added.
° "It's not forever."

Laverne James Cody, 83

Laverne James Cody, 83, of Blackfoot, passed away Sunday, Jan. 27, 2013 at his home from complications of diabetes and Parkinson’s Disease.
Laverne was born Aug. 12, 1929 in Wapello to Leslie Marion and Ella Loretta Adams Cody.  He attended school at Wapello and Shoshone, where he graduated the eighth grade.  He homesteaded in Shoshone with his parents, and he has lived in the Blackfoot area his adult life.

Lady Trojans down Lady Broncos in high scoring tournament opener

RIGBY — In a high scoring affair at Rigby High School the Blackfoot Lady Broncos came up on the short end of the scoreboard as they fell 72-64 to a hot shooting Lady Trojan squad to tip off the 4A 5th/6th district tournament on Tuesday evening.
"If you would have told me before the game that we were going to score 64 points I would have taken it," Blackfoot head coach Merle Smith said. "Rigby shot lights out on us tonight though. We didn't expect them to shoot the ball so well so we were packing it in and they did a good job of shooting the ball."

'Concerned Patrons of District 55' file recall petition paperwork

Two start-up recall petitions were submitted to the Bingham County Clerk’s office late Monday.

The petitions ask that Blackfoot School District trustees Jenny Hong and Scott Reese be recalled. Hong represents Zone 2; Reese represents Zone 3.
Both start-up petitions that were submitted each have more than the 20 signatures on them, required to begin recall petitions, said Marlene Jensen, the County Clerk’s Election Director. Twenty signatures are required to submit a start-up recall petition. The signatures on both petitions have been verified by the County Clerk's office.

BATTERY: Jan. 15, 4:32 p.m.: A caller said a female was just punched in the face by a male in the parking lot at Chevron.

SCARY SQUIRREL: Jan. 15, 11:23 p.m.: A woman said she believes there is a squirrel under her couch and she is afraid of it.

ATTEMPTED RAPE: Jan. 16, 1:48 p.m.: A woman said a man tried to have sex with her against her will this morning. She said the man began getting "fresh" with her and began taking her shirt off and broke her bra. She said she hit the man and ran out of the residence.

Joshua Richard Herrman, 32

Joshua Richard Herrman, 32, of Blackfoot passed away Thursday, Jan. 24, 2013.
 Josh was born Jan. 12, 1981 in Pocatello, to Floyd Herrman and Peggy Ann Buzzard.  He attended grade school in Wapello and graduated from Firth High School.  After graduation he lived in Logan, Utah, for four years.
 On June 11, 2005 Joshua married Tashina Roundy in Firth.  Together they have three children, Koi Van (7 years), Kolter Byron (4 years) and Gracie Lane (2 years).
