Russets poised to make a run at title

SHELLEY — The 2013-14 season did not go exactly as head coach Dave Hadley and the Shelley Russets had planned.
But despite the seasons ups and down the Russets are back at the state tournament looking to win the title the eluded them last season in the overtime loss to Snake River.
It also helped that the Russets played a non conference schedule that was one of the toughest in Eastern idaho all while trying to find players to replace the graduated McKay Cannon and Chad Leckington, two big pieces of last seasons success.

Defending champion Panthers looking for a repeat

THOMAS — It is never easy to spend an entire season playing with a target on your back.
But as the defending 3A state champion and a perennial power in the 3A ranks the Snake River Panthers are used to playing with the added pressure.
And when the team tops off the 3A state tournament against Filer today they will be just 96 minutes away from hoisting the championship trophy again.
Getting through the bracket to the championship game will be one of the toughest in recent memory as the Panthers face a tough road in their 10th consecutive state tournament appearance.

Josh Hill visits Stoddard

BLACKFOOT — Stoddard Elementary students gave Blackfoot native Josh Hill an enthusiastic welcome to their school on Tuesday.
Hill is No. 89 with the New Orleans Saints. He attended Stoddard Elementary, Blackfoot Sixth Grade Center and Mountain View Middle School before graduating from Blackfoot High School.
Asked what they liked about Hill, Stoddard fifth graders said:
"He's a professional!" exclaimed Kyler Mills.
"He proves anyone from anywhere can succeed," said Demry Wixom.

BernaDean Jones Harward Moldenhauer, 89

“Grammie”, 89, lifetime Blackfoot resident, passed away Friday, Feb, 28, 2014 at the Gables.
She was born June 13, 1924 in Idaho Falls, to John Thomas and Edna Estella Bradley Jones. She attended school in Blackfoot.
On June 7, 1944 she married Phillip Sinclair Harward, in Annapolis, Maryland. As Phillip was in the Navy, they had the opportunity to travel and live in different places.

Melody Andersen, 60

Melody Andersen, 60, of Brigham City, Utah passed away Sunday, March 2, 2014 at Willow Glen Health and Rehabilitation of natural causes.
Melody was born May 2, 1953 in Riverton, Wyo. to Theo D. Andersen and Elaine Mae John. She was raised in Rockford, Idaho. She graduated from Snake River High School in 1971 and went on to attend the LDS Business College, moved to Utah and then to Chicago before moving back to Idaho in 2010. She was living in Brigham City at the time of her death.

City to enforce designated smoking areas at city parks

After nearly one year of trying, members of Blackfoot's Independence High School student health council, along with Tracy Lambson from Southeastern Idaho Public Health, were successful in influencing the Blackfoot City Council to start enforcing a ,smoke free, park ordinance that is already on the books.
At Tuesday night's city council meeting, the council unanimously agreed to to begin enforcing the no smoking areas in the city's parks.
The council seemed to be in agreement that there "should be some areas in the park where people can smoke."

Cougars looking to bring title back to Firth

FIRTH — The Firth Cougars are no stranger to success at the state tournament and don't expect this year to be any different.
Head coach Scott Adams and the Cougars have been one of the best teams in the 2A ranks all season long and are looking to rerun a boys basketball championship to Firth after a three year hiatus.
