Rouind one goes to Pocatello in battle of the Parkers 68-47

BLACKFOOT — It took an hour longer to finally get started Friday night as a mix-up with the officials caused the Blackfoot High School administration to scramble for a pair of officials.
The officials did show up and after an hour delay the junior varsity game finally got going.
It was close to 9 p.m. before the variety teams hit the floor as Blackfoot head coach Dallin Parker finally got the chance to coach against his sister Carly who is a senior at Pocatello High School.

Broncos keep it close for three quarters, but fourth quarter run gives Bonneville 82-56 victory

BLACKFOOT — One look at the box score and the casual fan cpu;d easily assume that the Blackfoot Broncos 82-56 loss to Bonneville was a blowout.
And while the score alone indicates just that, if you happened to be one of the fans in attendance at Blackfoot High School on Thursday night you wold have seen the Broncos play their best game of the young season.
After a freak accident in pre game warmups the Broncos lost starting point guard Chase Causey for the game meaning that sophomore Dunkin Hale would run the point against a very tough Bonneville defense.

Idaho Education Association sues Snake River School District

The Idaho Education Association (IEA) has filed a civil lawsuit against the Snake River School District and Superintendent Mark Gabrylczyk on behalf of former teacher Elaine Asmus.
Until last summer, Asmus was a science teacher in the Snake River School District where she taught almost 30 years.
The suit was filed in Federal District Court on Wednesday and will be heard before U.S. District Court Judge B. Lynn Winmill.
The school district has 30 days to "answer to the complaint" after it is served, said IEA Region Director Maggie Calica.

Lady Cougars earn season sweep with 44-35 win over Shelley

FIRTH — In the seasons first meeting eight days earlier the Shelley Lady Russets had their way with their county rivals to the south taking down Firth by 21.
The two teams met for the final time in 2014 on Wednesday night in Firth with the Lady Cougars looking to earn a season split with the Russets.
A night after shooting 20 percent from the free throw line in a loss to Sugar-Salem, Firth made sure that would not be their downfall two nights in a row.

Baby born in flight aboard airliner

LOS ANGELES (AP) — A Southwest Airlines flight landed in Los Angeles with one more passenger than when it took off.
A passenger gave birth shortly after Flight 623 took off from San Francisco on Tuesday and the Phoenix-bound jet diverted to Los Angeles International Airport.
The woman was assisted by the flight crew and a doctor and nurse who were aboard, airline spokeswoman Emily Samuels said. She said hopefully the airline has a new customer for life.

Broncos still a work in progress, fall to Madison

BLACKFOOT — The first two weeks of the boys basketball season have featured its fair share of ups and downs for the Blackfoot Broncos.
But more often than not in the early weeks the Broncos have taken some lumps as the entered Tuesday night's home game with Madison at 0-2 and staring a gauntlet of a schedule going forward.
The Bobcats pounded the low post on the smaller Broncos to start the game and then Bill Hawkins ball control offense moved the ball around the perimeter for the open three pointer as Madison cruised to a 73-30 win over the Broncos at Blackfoot High School Tuesday.

Christmas Tree Fantasy ends on high note

The Bingham County Christmas Tree Fantasy ended on a high note last Saturday.
"I am overwhelmed by the generosity of residents of Bingham County," said Mary Ann Johnson, Christmas Tree Fantasy chairman. "It just blows my mind."
"About $18,000 was raised at the auction [on Thursday evening]," she said.
"Anyone can donate a tree, not just businesses, said Johnson. "The general public is also invited to come and bid at the auction."

Archibald wins Galaxy tablet in drawing

Jake Archibald of Blackfoot is the winner of the Samsung Galaxy 4 Tablet following a drawing at the Morning News office on Monday.
The contest took place on the newspaper's website throughout the past month.

Cat cafe is catnip for feline fans

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) — Cat lovers in Northern California are pouncing at the chance of spending time with feline company at a new cat cafe in Oakland.
Cat Town Cafe is giving dozens of visitors a chance to mingle with furry friends while sipping coffee and nibbling on cat-themed cookies.
The cafe opened last month and has been full since opening day. It was inspired by the cat cafe craze in Japan, where many people live in cramped high-rise apartments that don't allow pets.
