Mother-daughter celebrate Firth win

FIRTH — The mother-daughter team of Monica Backlund Nelson and her daughter Bailey Nelson share some special memories centering around the Firth Girls' Basketball championship.
Both played on a Firth Girls' Basketball team that won the state championship.
Monica was part of the Firth team that won the first state championship in school history in 1987.
Bailey was on the 2014 Firth championship team.

Panthers win district championship over Bear Lake 57-37

POCATELLO — In the opening quarter last Friday night against American Falls, Snake River did not come out and play it's best quarter against the winless Beavers.
Tuesday night the Panthers took on Bear Lake with the 3A District 5 championship on the line and this time they were determined to show that last week's game was a fluke.
Kade Keller did his best to make sure the Panthers made a statement early and take the feisty Bears out of the game.
Keller slashes and knifed his way to the basket to a tune of a game-high 27 points, seven in the first quarter as the Panthers dominated the Bears from start to finish earning a 57-37 victory, the district title and the chance to defend their 3A state championship.

CO detectors recommended for homes using gas

BLACKFOOT — In response to the tragic deaths of the Bill Parrish family in Pocatello, people are snapping up carbon monoxide (CO) detectors. By Tuesday night, area stores were sold out of detectors.
The tragedy involves Bill Parrish, his wife, Ross, and their younger sons, 15-year-old Keegan and 12-year-old Liam died last Saturday night because of carbon monoxide poisoning.
Blackfoot Fire Chief Kevin Gray said, CO detectors are recommended if people are buying gas or wood burning stoves for their homes.

Sandra Ellis, 72

Sandra Ellis, 72 of Blackfoot, passed away Sunday, Feb. 23, 2014 at the Bingham Memorial Hospital in Blackfoot. 
She was born June 24, 1941 in Pocatello, Idaho, the daughter of Yantes Everett and Evelyn Thompson Hensley.
Her father passed away before she was born. She was raised in Tyhee and the Blackfoot  area by her mother and step-father.
Sandra married Gary Ellis on Aug. 20, 1958 in Blackfoot.
She and Gary lived in Blackfoot all her life and raised their family here.

Margaret Hillam Hansen, 84

Margaret Hillam Hansen, 84, of Blackfoot, Idaho passed away peacefully Friday, Feb. 21, 2014 at her home from cancer.
She was born Feb. 8, 1930 in Marysville, Idaho, the daughter of George Marvin Hillam and Laura Mae Lemmon.
She grew up in Marysville and Ashton, Idaho. She attended elementary school in Marysville, Ashton and then at Madison High School.
Margaret served a LDS mission when she was 21 years old to the New England States. When she returned, she married her sweetheart, Alvon Jerry Hansen in the Idaho Falls LDS Temple on April 11, 1952.

Miranda Lee Ann Duchscher Morgan, 31

Miranda Lee Ann Morgan, 31, of Blackfoot, Idaho passed away Friday, Feb. 21, 2014 at the Emerald House in Blackfoot, Idaho.
She was born Oct. 11, 1982 in Rexburg, Idaho, the daughter of Thelma Scott and Delbert Lee Duchscher.
She lived in the Blackfoot area for most of her life and attended Blackfoot High School.
Miranda was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
She liked mud digging, fishing, listening to music and spending time with her children and family.

Ronald Wayne Reed, 70

Ronald Wayne Reed, 70 of Idaho Falls, Idaho, passed away Saturday, Feb. 22, 2014 at the Eastern Idaho Regional Medical Center in Idaho Falls.
He was born Feb. 7, 1944 in Salt Lake City, Utah, the son of George T. and Edith LaVerne Moon Reed. Ronald was raised in the Snake River area and graduated from Snake River High School in 1962. After graduation he went to an electrical school in Arizona. He then moved to the Seattle, Wash. area  and worked in an aircraft plant for Boeing.

Dale W. Sorensen, 62,

Dale W. Sorensen, 62,
Dale Walter Sorensen 62, of Leslie, Idaho passed away from a heart attack Sunday, Feb. 16, 2014 at Sedgewick Medical Center in Big Springs, Neb.
Dale was born in Blackfoot, Idaho to Harris (Doc)
and Marie Sorensen on Sept. 20, 1951. He was
raised in Blackfoot, graduating from Blackfoot High
School in 1969.
Dale worked for Robison Roofing for many years and
held various other jobs throughout his life. He was a long haul truck driver for Doug Andrus at the time of his death.
He married longtime friend Gay Lynne Bauer June

MARANA, Ariz. (AP) — Along with celebrating a World Golf Championship that took him to No. 4 in the world, Jason Day couldn't help but consider the rest of the young season and wonder just how much higher he could go.
That's when he paused to reflect, and to make a confession.
One of the worst labels hung on any golfer is that he's only playing for a check. Day said he used to be one of those guys.

NFL player visits Stalker

BLACKFOOT — Students at Stalker Elementary and the Blackfoot Sixth Grade Center welcomed "an extra-special guest" to an assembly on Monday.
New Orleans Saints tight end Josh Hill spoke on the importance of reading and education.
"I want to make sure you guys realize the importance of school," Hill told the students. "Reading will take you a long ways."
