Young Broncos drop season opener 4-1 to veteran Idaho Falls squad

IDAHO FALLS — Heading into Saturday's season opener Blackfoot boys head soccer coach Liam Pope knew his young squad was going to suffer some early season going pains.
After losing 13 of the 16 players on the 2013 varsity roster Pope and the young Broncos took to the field of the Idaho Falls Soccer Complex to take on a veteran Idaho Falls team on a cold and rainy morning.
Things did not start well for the Broncos as most of the opening 20 minutes was pent in the Broncos end as the aggressive and upperclassmen laden Tigers squad put the pressure on.

BSD teachers can earn leadership awards

Teachers in the Blackfoot School District can earn leadership premium dollars (from $850 to $5,780) by taking on leadership tasks in the upcoming school year "above and beyond" their contracted work.
The leadership award plan is part of the Idaho State Department of Education's effort to revamp the I teacher's salary system while encouraging educators to take on extra endeavors for the benefit of students such as writing new curriculum, working with at risk students or chairing a professional development committee.

Nevada Evelyn Wright Robards, 93

Nevada Evelyn Wright Robards, 93, one of Heavenly Father’s most precious gems in the human mosaic, returned home to Him, her eternal husband Robert (Bob) Robards, her other beloved family members and friends, who have preceded her, in the early morning of July 9, 2014.
Nevada was born March 5, 1921 to Wallace Bruce Wright and Emma Moser in Blackfoot, Idaho. She was the seventh of 11 children. She deeply loved her family and the the good life she shared on their farm in Riverton.

Jeffery Michels, 60

Jeffery Michels, 60, of Meridian and formerly of Blackfoot, passed away unexpectedly at his home in Meridian, Idaho on Thursday, Aug. 14, 2014.
Jeff was born in Newport, Rhode Island on Oct. 20, 1953, to Marine Staff Sergeant Lester "Red" Michels and Wanda Michels. He attended grade school with his older brother Steven on Marine Corps bases in South Carolina, North Carolina and Virginia. Red moved the family to Blackfoot in 1965 when he was deployed to Vietnam.

Blackfoot School Board assesses flood damage

Blackfoot School District Superintendent Chad Struhs said that the Aug. 6 flash flood that hit town could have easily ruined Blackfoot High School's entire new gym floor had it not been for the quick work of the custodial staff in the building when the water started rushing in.
Struhs addressed the flood damage that the district incurred at the school board meeting on Tuesday night, saying that "several buildings were flooded" from the storm.

More food wanted

BLACKFOOT — As the growing season reaches its peak and folks begin to harvest fresh fruits and vegetables from fields gardens and orchards, organizers of the Community Food Pantry are hoping that growers will donate their excess produce to help feed those in need.
"There's always an ongoing need for food; and recipients at the food pantry really appreciate the fresh produce, because many of them don't have gardens," Ronda Cheatham said.

Kathy “Shorty” Palmer, 64

Kathy “Shorty” Palmer, 64, of Blackfoot, passed away Monday, Aug. 18, 2014, at the Bingham Memorial Hospital from causes due to cancer.
Shorty was born May 6, 1950, in Boise, Idaho to Volna Colyd Olsen and Viola Ruth Terry Olsen, the third oldest of five children. She grew up in the Leslie and Mackay area. Shorty attended Mackay High School and graduated in 1967. After graduation she moved to Salt Lake City to attend the LDS Business College.

Armstead Joseph Evans Jr., 92
Armstead Joseph Evans Jr., formerly of Blackfoot, Idaho and recently of Rogue Valley Manor, Medford, Oregon, passed away at 92 of natural causes Aug. 7, 2014.
AJ was born March 12, 1922 in Hartshorne, Oklahoma, to Armstead Joseph Evans Sr. and Thelma Alma Mitchell. He was the first of four children.  As a young boy, he moved to a farm near Valley Falls, Kansas where the Evans clan was well established. While in college at Kansas State Jack enlisted in the US Army Air Force and served as a B24 pilot and squadron leader in the South Pacific during World War II.

Alta Deawn Herbst, 85

Alta Deawn Herbst, 85, of Groveland, passed away Saturday, Aug. 16, 2014 at her home, surrounded by her family.
Deawn was born Jan. 1, 1929 in Blackfoot, Idaho, to Byron and Mildred Matilda Samuelson Jackman.  She attended Rose Elementary School and Moreland High School.  She is a lifetime Blackfoot resident.
On Feb. 26, 1946 she married Glenn William Herbst in Blackfoot.  Their marriage was further solemnized in the Idaho Falls LDS Temple on Aug. 12, 1978.  Glenn preceded her in death on Nov. 21, 1998.

Ila Kathy Kunz, 68

Ila Kathy Kunz, 68, of Moreland, Idaho was taken to her heavenly home by angels on Thursday, Aug. 14, 2014 after a valiant fight with cancer surrounded by her loving family at Eastern Idaho Regional Medical Center in Idaho Falls, Idaho.
Kathy was born Oct. 30, 1945 to Charles Skinner and Ila Mae Cummins.  She was raised in Lava Hot Springs and attended elementary school there and then attended North Gem High School in Bancroft.
On June 6, 1964 Kathleen married Thayne Kunz in Bancroft. Following their marriage they made their home in Blackfoot
