Local man to be released to house arrest with restrictions

Appearing before Seventh District Judge David Nye Friday, Jesse William Whipkey learned he will be released, awaiting his sentencing, under certain restrictions.
Whipkey has been incarcerated in the Bingham County Jail since February.
Whipkey pleaded guilty in June to aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. Initially charged with attempted murder, Whipkey had a three-day trial before he pleaded guilty to aggravated assault.

AMMON — Cole Mansanarez crushed a two run homer in the top of the third inning and Shane Parkinson launched a lead off home run in the bottom of the fifth as the boys of Bingham County collided on the diamond in a loser out affair at the American Legion District Tournament on Friday afternoon.
In the end Blackfoot were able to prevail in the thrilling game as Tyler Lindsay came through with a clutch 2-out, 2-RBI single in the top of the seventh inning to lift Blackfoot to a 8-6 victory over Snake River.
"What a game. Good pitching and some big hits," Blackfoot head coach Jeff Katseanes said. "It was a fun game to watch for a fan but not so much as a coach because it was a little stressful."

BLACKFOOT — Blackfoot School District 55 'Board of Trustees' met Thursday evening at the district office for their monthly meeting where interim superintendent Chad Struhs lined out some of the district's goals for the upcoming school year.

IONA — The Blackfoot Bronco American Legion squad took to the Bonneville High School baseball field for day one of the American Legion District Tournament on Thursday morning and at the end of a very long day on the diamond, Blackfoot came away with an unwanted split of the day as they knocked off the Skyline Grizzlies 7-3 in game one and then fell to the top seeded Burley Green Sox 3-0 in the afternoon match up.

Panthers fall to Hawks 3-0

AMMON — The Snake River Panthers took to the Hillcrest ball diamond on Thursday for a high noon showdown with the fourth seeded Canyon Ridge out of the western division. At the end of a rapidly paced affair, the Panthers came out on the short end of a 3-0 contest.
"We just had a couple of instances where we lost our focus a bit," Snake River head coach Tom Strickland said.

Marvin Wayne Vail, 83

Obituary
Marvin Wayne Vail, 83, of Blackfoot passed away Monday, July 23, 2012, at Eastern Idaho Regional Medical Center in Idaho Falls.
Wayne was born March 28, 1929, in Pocatello,to Marvin James Vail and Elva Florence Neilson. He was raised in Star Valley, Wyo. At age 16, his family moved to Brigham City, Utah. He graduated from Box Elder High School where he played fullback on the state championship, undefeated football team two years in a row.

Paralysis doesn't stop O-Mok-See competitor

Since 1976, Rorrie Toren from Great Falls, Mont., has been paralyzed from his waist down. He was 16 years old.
His paralysis hasn't stopped him from competing in rodeo events. He is Blackfoot competing in pattern horse racing, known as O-Mok-See.
"Before I was paralyzed, I did it all," Toren said. "I rode bulls and saddle broncs and roped.
"I was breaking a horse when I broke my back," he said. "I was on bareback in a bucking chute. I knew I had broken my back before I hit the ground.
"Then, in 1993, I broke my hip when a horse slipped on mud and fell on me," Toren said.

Pingree couple are EISF parade grand marshals

The Eastern Idaho State Fair’s board of directors has named Gary and Muriel Judge of Pingree as grand marshals of the 2012 Eastern Idaho State Fair. They will lead the annual Fair Parade down Shilling Avenue on Saturday, Sept. 1, at 10 a.m.

LaRue Norman Bird, 91

LaRue Norman Bird, 91, passed away Monday, July 23, 2012, at her home in Groveland.  
She was born Jan. 23, 1921, in Blackfoot to Zenas William and Daisy Strong Norman.  LaRue was raised on the family farm in the Rose area where she learned to work hard in the fields, raising potatoes, sugar beets and doing chores around the home.  She enjoyed school, teaching church classes and was a graduate of Blackfoot High School and seminary in 1938.
