Woman, team investigate paranormal

Michelle Morgan was 14 years old when she first began considering the existence of ghosts. That intrigue has remained throughout her life, and today she works as a paranormal investigator to discover proof and to dispel misconceptions about paranormal activity.
Morgan is a certified paranormal investigator and founder of White Light Western Paranormal Investigations. Morgan’s team has conducted various investigations in Pocatello and Idaho Falls, and Morgan and her husband Rick regularly travel to the famously haunted Virginia City, Nev., where they have also done investigations.

IFPD arrest 11 for distribution of Spice

Two Shelley men were among 11 arrested Saturday night in Idaho Falls for the illegal distribution of Spice.
Kelly Mark Nelson, 24, and Henry Villegas, 21, of Shelley, and David Bartlett, 24, Lorraine Kay Torres, 44, William C. Brick, 24, Marc Augustus Adonga-Leonard, 21, Bryce Scott Mendel, 26, Brent Richard Powell, 22, Brian Keith Carson, Jr., 24, Becky Larue Jayne, 29, and Alan S. Hales, 18, all of Idaho Falls, were all arrested for possession of a controlled substance with the intent to deliver, a felony.

Maria Isabel Rodriquez Sanchez, 56

Maria Isabel Rodriquez Sanchez, 56, of Blackfoot passed away Saturday, Jan. 28, 2012 at Bingham Memorial Hospital following a courageous battle with cancer. She was given eight months to live over nine years ago.
She was born Aug. 6, 1955, the daughter of Jacob and Adell Rodriquez.
As a child, Maria and her family traveled around working seasonal jobs where Mary met her husband, Jose Ramos Sanchez. They were married in 1971 in Blackfoot, Idaho where they made their home.
Maria was a member of the Catholic Church.

Katherine Pauline Giest, 93

Katherine Pauline Giest, 93, of Blackfoot passed away Saturday, Jan. 28, 2012 at The Willows in Blackfoot.
She was born March 12, 1918 in Dickinson, North Dakota, the daughter of Martin Hegel and Rosalia Ehly.
Katherine was raised in Dickinson, and in Fromberg, Mont., where she received her education.
On March 12, 1936, she married Jonathan “Pete” Giest in Montana.
She has lived in North Dakota, Montana, Colorado, Washington, Oregon, California and has lived in Blackfoot since 1956.
She was a member of the Jason Lee Memorial Methodist Church.

Lovell J. Callister, 88

Lovell J. Callister, 88, of Blackfoot, passed away Thursday, Jan. 26, 2012 at his home.
Lovell was born August 21, 1923 in Moreland to Orson Pratt and Annie Francella Jones Callister. He attended Groveland Elementary and graduated from Blackfoot High School.
He has lived in the Blackfoot area most of his life, living a few years in Merced, Calif. He attended the University of Idaho in Moscow for two years and then transferred to Utah State, earning a degree in Ag Economics.

D55 trustees vote no on Crane's contract extension

The Blackfoot School Board of Trustees failed to pass a motion to extend Superintendent Scott Crane’s contract another year during their Thursday night meeting. Crane is currently in the first year of a three-year contract, set to expire July 2014.
A motion to extend the contract by one year failed on a 2-3 vote. Trustees Mary Jo Marlow and Taylor Johansen voted in favor of extending the contract, while Chairman R. Scott Reese, Vice Chairman Pete Lipovac and Trustee Jenny Hong voted in opposition.
Prior to the vote, the trustees met in executive session for about five hours.

Scouts learn leadership at Klondike Derby

Creativity was the rule of the day as 14 Scout troops from the Wolverine District took part in a Klondike Derby over the weekend despite little snow.
Objectives of the Derby included developing teamwork, learning to work together and building self-confidence, said scout leader Merlin Andersen. It also gets kids out of the house and allows them to sleep outdoors.
Curtis Burtenshaw, the 2012 Klondike chairman, said planning for the Derby begins two or three months beforehand.
“Plans are refined as the time gets closer,” Burtenshaw said. “I went to the Internet to come up with activities.”

District 55 to begin implementation of tech plan soon

BLACKFOOT — High school teachers in Blackfoot will soon receive iPads to use in the classroom as part of the district's technology plan to implement the "Students Come First" legislation.
But before they can receive the new technology, teachers will need to submit a plan to the school district regarding how they plan to use the technology in their classroom.
"We want the teachers to have a plan to improve their instruction," Technology Committee member Brian Kress said.
In addition, five iPads each will be distributed to all other schools for teachers to utilize.

'Brigadoon' set coming together at Nuart

The set backdrop of the musical, "Brigadoon," is taking shape at the Nuart Theater in Blackfoot. Artists have been working evenings to develop the feel of the Scottish highlands.
Blackfoot artist Ken Spencer sketched the background "as I was sitting in the theater with the Mosers, who are the directors of the play."
Spencer then painted a color study to figure out what colors he wanted used.
"Each two-inch square on the color sketch equals two-feet on the backdrop," said Spencer.

No hearing needed for charter school

Public hearing not necessary for charter school petition
The Blackfoot School Board of Trustees narrowly passed a motion to refer a petition for a new Fort Hall charter elementary school to the Idaho Public Charter School Commission during their meeting Thursday night.
