September 30, 2011

Dean Watt, 94, of Omaha, Nebraska formerly of Blackfoot, Idaho passed away September 28, 2011.
Graveside services are under the direction of Hawker Funeral Home in Blackfoot and will be announced.

Lois Wilcox, 56

September 30, 2011

With her family at her side, Lois Wilcox, age 56, died peacefully on Tuesday evening, September 27, 2011, at Portneuf Medical Center in Pocatello, Idaho, after a courage’s battle with cancer.
Lois was born in Montpelier, Idaho on November 18, 1954, to Earl Raymond Wilcox and Donna Robison Wilcox. She grew up in Montpelier, graduating from Bear Lake High School in 1973. She moved with her family to Blackfoot, Idaho later that same year.  She completed an Associate’s degree at Rick’s College, and furthered her education at Idaho State University.

Broncos tie Knights 1-1 on senior night

BLACKFOOT — It was a near perfect day for a soccer game on the Blackfoot pitch on Thursday afternoon as the Blackfoot Broncos squared off with conference rival Hillcrest on an evening when Blackfoot paid a fond farewell to four seniors.
Unfortunately, those seniors didn't pick up a win in their final home contest but they didn't lose either, finishing in a 1-1 tie.

P&Z commissioners approve two variances, deny another

BLACKFOOT — Planning and Zoning Commissioners approved variances for the East Idaho Regional Waste Water Authority and Vickie Burke and denied a variance to Phillip and Nancy Turner at Wednesday night's hearing.
No representative from the East Idaho Regional Waste Water Authority attended the hearing.
When the water facility was built, the setback requirement to a road Right of Way was 30 feet. Since more than 400 vehicles travel this road each day, the road is now considered a major arterial. Major arterials require a 50-foot setback.

Panthers roll Beavers 3-0

THOMAS — A week ago the Snake River volleyball squad gutted out a four game victory over Sugar-Salem, looking a little leg weary in the effort. After a rare weekend off, the Lady Panthers retook to their home court looking for a conference win as American Falls came calling.
The rest did the Panthers good as they cruised to a relatively easy 25-7, 25-10, 25-10 victory.
"I think that they came back with a new focus tonight," Snake River head coach Shelli VanOrden said. "I was happy with how they came out and performed."

Community Players begin season on Friday

BLACKFOOT — The Blackfoot Community Players will begin their 2011-2012 season with "The Great Ice Cream Scheme," opening Friday at the Nuart Theater, 195 N. Broadway.
"The Great Ice Cream Scheme" will run Sept. 30, Oct. 1, 3, 7, 8 and 10. The story follows Pop and his Pop Sicle's Ice Cream Parlor, which is the most popular in town thanks to Pop's secret recipe. But when a cold-hearted villain, I.C. Custard, decides to steal Pop's recipe, the story takes an exciting turn.
Tickets are $7 or $5 on opening night. Shows start at 7:30 p.m.

State Board of Education recognizes two Blackfoot schools

BLACKFOOT — Two Blackfoot schools have been recognized by the Idaho State Board of Education and will receive a Distinguished School or Additional Yearly Growth award for the 2010-2011 school year.
Blackfoot High School was one of 12 schools designated as a Distinguished School. To be designated a Distinguished School, a school must be in the top five percent of schools which make Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) for two consecutive years, and reduce the gap in groups or sub-groups by at least 10 percent.

Fire destroys barn in Moreland

MORELAND – A fire destroyed a barn in Moreland Wednesday afternoon. The Blackfoot and Fort Hall Fire Departments responded to the blaze. For more information about the fire, read Thursday's Morning News.

Jerry Leslie Sollender, 79

September 28, 2011

Jerry Leslie Sollender, 79, of Mackay, passed away Sept. 26, 2011, at the Mountain Valley Assisted Living in Ammon. Funeral Service are pending under the direction of Anderson Family Funeral Home of Arco.

Z. Arlene Labrum, 74

September 28, 2011

Zelpha Arlene Labrum, 74, of Shelley passed away Sunday, Sept. 25, 2011, at Eastern Idaho Regional Medical Center.
She was born Sept. 21, 1937 in Ririe to Gordon Lee Miller and Zelpha Esther Scott Miller. She grew up and attended schools in Ririe. She graduated from Ririe High School.
She married Robert Lee Anderson on May 17, 1956, in Idaho Falls.  They later divorced. On Nov. 7, 1971, she married Ronald William Labrum in Elko, Nevada. Their marriage was later solemnized in the Idaho Falls LDS Temple on March 24, 2000. Ronald died July 11, 2004.
