Community Center grants fund preschool scholarships

BLACKFOOT — The Blackfoot Community Center has received two grants to allow children of the most financially challenged families to attend its early childhood education program.
The first is a grant for $2,500 from the Kissler Family Foundation Philanthropic Gift Fund in the Idaho Community Foundation. The second is a grant for $1,000 from the Jane Sandy Fund and the Idaho Community Foundation Youth Trust Fund.

Laura Jensen Neff, 59

September 14, 2011

Laura Jensen Neff, 59, of Blackfoot passed away on Monday, Sept. 12, 2011, at her home from a brief illness. A funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 17, 2011, at the Blackfoot Stake Center, 1650 Highland Dr., Blackfoot, under the direction of Bishop Randy Hickman.
The family will meet with friends on Friday from 7-9 p.m. at Hawker Funeral Home, 132 S. Shilling Ave., Blackfoot, and for one hour prior to the service at the stake center. Condolences may be sent to the family at condolences@hawkerfuneralhome.com.

Presidential candidate visits Blackfoot

BLACKFOOT — Presidential hopeful John Davis visited Blackfoot Tuesday. He was touring county seats in Southeastern Idaho from Soda Springs to Rexburg on his red, white and blue "John Davis for President" bus.
This is his first run for elected office. He is running as a conservative Republican.
"I am pro-life, pro-gun and pro-America," Davis said. "I am running for president because of the condition of the country."
For examples of "condition of the country," Davis cited the nation's morals.

More soldiers return home

POCATELLO — More National Guardsmen of the 116th Cavalry Brigade Combat Team were greeted home by family and friends as they arrived at the Pocatello Airport Tuesday after a year-long deployment.
For Staff. Sgt. Donald "D.J." Robertson of Blackfoot, returning home from his second deployment means being able to spend time with his family and finally getting to know his nine-month-old daughter.
Robertson's mother, Donna McBride, said he was able to see his daughter born via video chat on Skype and said when he came home for two weeks in April he could barely put her down.

Damien Joseph Young, 22

September 13, 2011

Damien Joseph Young 22, of Blackfoot, passed away Sept. 9, 2011 peacefully at his home. Damien was born June 18, 1989, the youngest of four children born to Stan and Jody Anderson Young.
Throughout his life Damien attended schools in both Blackfoot and Snake River and had many friends. Damien was a unique individual. He had the biggest heart of gold and loved everyone in his life with all that he had. He was the most loving, loyal, honest person that you will ever meet. He found the good in everyone and didn’t judge anyone; instead he helped them as much as he possibly could.

Idaho Central donates computers to Irving Kindergarten Center

BLACKFOOT —The Idaho Central Credit Union donated 29 used computers, keyboards and microphones to the Irving Kindergarten Center in Blackfoot.
Monday, students attended an assembly to thank Kent Oram, Chief Executive Officer of ICCU, for this contribution.
The computers will be used for a literacy program that helps students learn names, rhyming, letters and sounds and to read three-letter words.

Former Blackfoot man helps rescue woman

PATRICK AIR FORCE BASE, Fla. -- At the 920th Rescue Wing, the main mission is right there in the title. While the wing's primary focus is combat search and rescue, not every rescue involves combat, searching, or even pararescuemen. In fact, one of the most recent rescues was simply three noble airmen bravely doing the right thing.
Master Sergeant Kenneth Swainston, a reservist with the 920th RQW at Patrick, the Air Force Reserve Command's only rescue wing, was driving home after working an annual training day on base Sept. 6.

Two arrested on drug, weapons charges

BLACKFOOT — Blackfoot Police arrested two people early Sunday morning on drug and weapons offenses after someone saw them with a gun near the Eastern Idaho State Fair.
Police located Cass Tendore, 27, of Pocatello, and Saresa Coffee, 22, of Blackfoot, near the carnival entrance of the Eastern Idaho State Fair on East Airport Road at 12:30 a.m. Sunday.
Tendore was arrested for trafficking a controlled substance, possession of methamphetamine, three counts of carrying a concealed weapon without a license and criminal trespass from the fairgrounds.

Susan Rae Bencomo, 63

September 12, 2011

Susan Rae Bencomo, 63, of Blackfoot passed away Thursday, Sept. 8, 2011, at her home.
Susan was born June 1, 1948, in Blackfoot to George A. Greaves and Virginia R. Hanselman. She lived her entire life in Blackfoot, graduating from Blackfoot High School.
She married Gailen Gifford; they were later divorced. In April of 1974 she married Ismael Bencomo in Blackfoot; they were later sealed in the Idaho Falls LDS Temple.
