Two candidates in city council runoff election

BLACKFOOT — Two candidates for Blackfoot City Council will face off in a runoff election Tuesday after no candidate received a majority of the vote in the November election.
Butch Hulse, who received 49.7 percent of the vote in the November election, and Clair L. Broadhead, who received 37.4 percent of the vote, are running for Seat 4 on the city council. A third candidate received 13 percent of the vote.
The seat is currently held by Robert Layton, who did not seek re-election.

Mother on quest to stop Shaken Baby Syndrome

BLACKFOOT – There are some things a mother should never see. Three years ago Diana Empey received a panicked phone call from Patricia Widerburg, the woman caring for her two children. Empey rushed to the daycare to find a street lined with fire trucks, ambulance and police.
“The cops grabbed me and said this is mom. Trish [Widerburg]looked like a zombie and just kept saying ‘I’m sorry...I’m so sorry..’ and then a paramedic grabbed me and said ‘can you keep it together? This is going to be horrifying.’ I was so confused – I had no idea what was going on,” said Empey.

Postal proposals under fire

POCATELLO — The United States Postal Service is looking into closing the mail processing operation at Pocatello and moving it to Salt Lake City, Utah.
Pocatello and all of Southeastern Idaho is part of the Salt Lake Postal District.
Another proposal is to extend the delivery of first class mail from overnight to two-to-three day delivery.
"There would be no changes in retail and other services," said Salt Lake postal district manager Ken McArthur. "There would be no changes in acceptance time."

Christmas Tree Fantasy auction nets $19K

BLACKFOOT — The 33rd annual Bingham County Christmas Tree Fantasy auction Thursday night raised nearly $19,000 for local organizations. The Fantasy continues today from 10 a.m.-8 p.m. and Saturday from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. at the Needlecraft Building at the Eastern Idaho State Fairgrounds.
The tree titled "Nutcracker Sweet" decorated by Bingham Memorial Hospital's Radiology Department received the highest bid of the night, bringing in $1,750. The decadently decorated tree is a child's dream filed with lollipops, gingerbread houses, candy canes and giant snowflakes wrapped with pink and green.

BLACKFOOT — The 33rd annual Bingham County Christmas Tree Fantasy is underway at the Needlecraft Building of the Eastern Idaho State Fairgrounds. The Fantasy will be open from 10 a.m.-8 p.m. through Saturday.
The tree auction will be Thursday at 7 p.m. Admission is $2. The Gift Boutique and Sweet Shoppe will be open throughout the week at the event. Lunch and dinner will also be available for purchase at the cafe.

Children's Community Christmas Project sponsors raffle, solicits donations

BLACKFOOT — The Children's Community Christmas Project is currently working to help provide toys to the children in the community who would have little or no Christmas. Between 650 and 700 children have a happier Christmas each year through this project.

two arrested on drug charges

BLACKFOOT — Two people were arrested earlier this week on drug charges after a route traffic stop Monday revealed the man was in possession of several drugs and a lot of cash.
Jerod A. Wilson, 37, of Blackfoot is in the Bingham County Jail on a $250,000 bond after Blackfoot Police found 2.2 ounces of methamphetamine, one ounce of marijuana, 1.2 grams of hashish, drug paraphernalia and $5,710 in cash during a vehicle search on traffic stop on Monday.

Snow arrives, storm stronger than expected

BLACKFOOT — The National Weather Service has issued a winter weather advisory to be in effect until 6 p.m. this evening.
A line of intense snowfall over the Snake River Plain will shift south through Blackfoot and Pocatello this afternoon with intensifying snowfall from Blackfoot to American Falls through 6 p.m.
Snow accumulations of 2-4 inches are possible today.
Interstate 15 and 86 along with Highway 39 will see accumulating snow and slick roads through this evening.
Brief heavy snow will accompany the storm reducing visibility at times to one-half mile.
