December 28th
BLACKFOOT — The nations best shooters descended upon the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs over the weekend of December 3-6. Among them was Blackfoot High School graduate Marianna Molinari, a rising star in the shooting ranks.
Molinari, shooting in the rifle event, spent three stressful days competing against the toughest competition that the nation had too offer, including current Olympic team members, just a little of a step up in competition for the talented Molinari.
BLACKFOOT — Bingham County residents proved generous in their donations to the Salvation Army Red Kettle campaign.
More than $4,200 in donations were collected from the kettles—$1,700 more than last year.
The Southeastern Idaho Community Action Agency's Bingham County office is the local Salvation Army service extension. SEICAA coordinates volunteers for the kettles and collects and distributes the funds collected to the local community.
"My goal was to go over $4,000," Bingham County SEICAA Program Coordinator Bobette Jackson said. "Next year we would like to hit $5,000."
December 27th
BLACKFOOT — For the past two weeks, large trees along the north and south banks of the realigned Blackfoot River have been removed to comply with Corps of Engineer recommendations.
District Seven Flood Control board secretary Marion Walker said the Army Corps of Engineers has established new recommendations for flood control as a result of the many lawsuits brought against the Corps after Hurricane Katrina in 2005.
Before 1962, the river meandered, Walker said. In fact, there were two channels.
December 24th
BLACKFOOT — Four former athletes at Blackfoot High School appeared with their attorneys before Seventh District Magistrate Judge Charles Roos Thursday in the Bingham County Courthouse.
The defendants, Anthony Clarke, Nathan A. Walker, Tyson W. Katseanes and Logan J. Chidester, are all 19 years old.
The four face felony charges of forcible sexual penetration by use of a foreign object and misdemeanor charges for alleged incidents involving underclassmen who were teammates.
FIRTH — It was billed as a cat fight at Firth High School as the Firth Cougars welcomed the South Fremont Cougars for a non-conference tilt on the hardwood.
In the end that cat fight was a lopsided affair as Firth steamrolled the 3A Cougars 58-27.
"We did a good job," Firth head coach Scott Adams said. "A lot of things that we were able to work on in game situations."
A night after a hard fought loss to Sugar-Salem, Firth came back on a mission, opening the night with a 11-0 run over the first four minutes of play.
JoAnn Samuelson, 76, of Blackfoot passed away Tuesday, Dec. 21, 2010, at her home.
She was born Sept. 6, 1934, in Idaho Falls to Leora Scouten. She graduated from Idaho Falls High School in 1952.
JoAnn married Merlin Floyd Samuelson in Blackfoot in August of 1953. They were later divorced.
JoAnn was a secretary for the Blackfoot School District and worked for Nonpareil and King B.
She enjoyed playing pool, crocheting, sewing, quilting and crossword puzzles.     Â
December 22nd
BLACKFOOT — Members of the community are welcome to St. Bernard Catholic Church's Nativity play on Friday.
Director Donna Blackman said several of the parish's children will present the play at 5 p.m.
"There's no charge," Blackman said. "This is the children's gift to the community as we celebrate Christmas."
Blackman said the play, which features the story of the birth of Jesus Christ and many familiar hymns, will last about 30 minutes.
She said those who attend are welcome to stay for services which will follow immediately after completion of the play.
THOMAS — Snake River vs Blackfoot. A highly charged situation regardless of circumstances. On Wednesday night, the emotions were ratcheted up just a bit as Blackfoot took to the hardwood with their coach in the stands but not on the bench due to a controversial decision by the Blackfoot superintendent.
The Blackfoot players honored their embattled coach by wearing his name on the back of their warm ups as well as his initials on their arms.
Vera Clark Oram was born October 5, 1920 to George H. and Louise Parker Clark in Blackfoot, Idaho. She was delivered at home by her Grandmother Clark. Her grandmother had also delivered her five sisters and one brother before her, and the two more sisters that were to come later. When she was four years old the family moved to the last house on West Center Street and that is where she and her brother and eight sisters grew up.
BLACKFOOT – The Blackfoot School District School Board announced in a press release they have placed Coach Jonathan Packer on administrative leave from his coaching duties effective December 23, 2010 pending the investigation and review of the hazing incidents.
