Panthers avenge loss with 3-0 sweep of Bears

THOMAS — On Wednesday evening Snake River head coach Shelli VanOrden stated that her team was going to beat Bear Lake on Thursday evening because of the work that they got against the Beavers.
On Thursday, VanOrden's Panthers came out and proved their coach to be quite prophetic as they swept their biggest rivals 25-15, 25-15 and 25-18 much to the delight of the large crowd in attendance.

Broncos win district title in sudden death overtime

IDAHO FALLS — There's an old adage in sports that it is tough to beat a team three times in a season. On Thursday afternoon the Blackfoot soccer team proved that to be correct as they knocked off the defending 4A state champion Bonneville Bees in thrilling fashion as Carlos Flores knocked home the game winner five minutes into the sudden death overtime for the 2-1 victory.

Panthers win district title 2-0

ABERDEEN — Entering the 2011 prep soccer season the Snake River Panthers knew that they had a chance at winning the district title. The Panthers did just that on Wednesday evening as they knocked off their bitter rivals, American Falls 2-0 to claim the trophy and the bid into next weeks state tournament.
"This was a better game as far as play goes," Snake River head coach Trevor Peterson said. "I am just real proud of the guys, they came out and executed, kept their heads and just played our game today."

Keith Vernon Jensen, 62

Keith Vernon Jensen, 62, of Blackfoot, passed away Friday, Oct. 7, 2011 at his home.
He was born March 2, 1949 in Blackfoot to Vernon Wilford and Lenore Elsie Wallace Jensen. He attended school at Wapello Elementary, Blackfoot Junior High School and graduated from Blackfoot High School in 1968.
Keith has lived his entire life in the Blackfoot area, at the Blackfoot Dam and in Wapello.
On Jan. 11, 1983 he married Clara Lee Kern in Blackfoot.
He was employed by the Bureau of Indian Affairs as Fort Hall irrigation dam tender; he has been employed with them for the last 40 years.

Peggy Sue Erickson Speas May 28, 1958 —  Oct. 7, 2011

Beloved mother, grandmother, wife, and daughter passed away on Oct. 7, 2011. Peggy is the daughter of Wallace and Diane Erikson and the wife of Kyle Speas. She was received with open arms by her son Daniel and her beloved grandmother, Sofea Elizabeth Erickson.
Peggy was active in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She served in many positions throughout her life. She is remembered for her many years of service in the Primary and Young Women’s organizations. She loved teaching children and watching them learn and grow. She touched the lives of everyone that she served.

Sharon Mae Hansen, 67

On Oct. 7, 2011, Sharon Mae Wallin Hansen 67, of Elko, Nev. returned to the welcoming arms of her heavenly family.
She was born May 6, 1944 to Carl & Edna Wallin in Pocatello. She was the youngest of five children. Sharon graduated from Pocatello High School in 1962.
She married James B. Hansen on Aug. 3, 1968. They resided in Springfield and were blessed with six children. James B. and Sharon were sealed in the Idaho Falls LDS Temple, Sept. 15, 1979.

Roberta Emogene Johnston, 84

Roberta Emogene Johnston, 84, passed from this life to the next on Oct. 6, 2011 in her home in Blackfoot with her family at her side.
She was born on July 7, 1927 in Page, Okla., the only daughter of Cleon and William Hollingback.
She graduated from Pocatello High in 1945, and continued her education at Utah State University for one year, and always found ways to continue to learn.
She and her husband, Paul Emigh Johnston Jr. were married Feb. 19, 1950 in Meridian. Together they raised four children, Paul III, Mark, Teresa, and Kevin.

Alan F. Archibald, 69

Alan F. Archibald, 69, of Blackfoot passed away Wednesday, Oct. 12, 2011 at Eastern Idaho Regional Medical Center in Idaho Falls.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 15, 2011 at Hawker Funeral Home, 132 South Shilling Avenue in Blackfoot.
Family will meet with friends and relatives for one hour prior to services at the funeral home. Condolences may be sent to condolences@hawkerfuneralhome.com.

Lucille Wright Benson, 77

Lucille Wright Benson passed away due to complications from heart surgery on Oct. 11, 2011, in St. George, Utah.
She was born Feb. 7, 1934, in Blackfoot to Cecil F. and Anna Polatis Wright. She married J. Boyd Benson on Oct. 24, 1952, in the Idaho Falls LDS Temple.
Lucille is survived by her children: Debra (Edgar) Wells, Diane Mitchell, Susan (Allen) Tripp, John (Gloria) Benson, Scott (Kathleen) Benson and Lisa (David) Payne.
She was preceded in death by her husband, J. Boyd Benson, and son, Steven Boyd Benson. She had 28 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren.

Eldon Leroy Gardner, 67

Eldon Leroy Gardner, 67, of Blackfoot passed away Oct 10, 2011 following a short illness.
He was born on Nov. 1, 1943 in Blackfoot, the sixth of 11 children of Raymond and Nina May Crow Gardner.
His upbringing on his parents’ small, rocky farm was hard but happy.  He was the epitome of a “people person,” a good husband, father, and grandfather, ranch foreman and hunting guide. 
His interests included horses, livestock, gardening, reading, and telling stories and jokes. Among his many endearing qualities was his encyclopedic memory for jokes, which he told at every appropriate opportunity.
