Flooding update: Weather Service expects manageable snowmelt

BLACKFOOT — The National Weather Service continues to issue flood warnings for the Snake River in Blackfoot and Shelley.
A spring-like weather pattern is expected to bring intervals of showers and fluctuating temperatures to the region throughout the week and is expected to melt snowpack in an manageable fashion, according to the National Weather Service.
The Snake River at Blackfoot is forecast to rise at least another six inches over the next four days, cresting at 11.54 feet by Saturday evening. On Tuesday night, the river was 10.9 feet. Flood stage is 10 feet.

Shelley graduates 156 in Class of 2011

SHELLEY — One hundred fifty-six Shelley graduates received a rousing send-off Tuesday evening at their graduation ceremony.
The Class of 2011 earned scholarships and awards totaling more than $900,000.
Addressing her classmates, valedictorian Wendee Morgan said, “Stop worrying about filling someone else’s shoes, just fill your own.”
She continued, “As Abraham Lincoln said, ‘Whatever you are, be a good one.’”
As valedictorian Kemais Ehlers related the incident that when he was 4 years old, he had climbed onto the counter to get some toothpicks.

Marguerite King, 95

Marguerite Y. King, 95, of Firth passed away May 23, 2011, at her home under hospice care.

Charley Gyder, 77

SUN CITY, Ariz. — Charley Gyder of Sun City was born April 6, 1934, in Franklin, Penn., to Ruth and Charles Gyder and was the youngest of three children.
Charley attended Penn State University in 1952 with the ROTC Program and graduated in 1956 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering.

Lila Lemmon Baldwin, 96

Lila Lemmon Baldwin, 96, of Rockford passed away May 22, 2011. at her home.
She was born Feb. 21, 1915, in Garfield, Idaho, the youngest daughter of Washington Lemmon and Ida Ethel Hamilton.
Her early childhood was spent in Marysville, near Ashton. In 1928, her father bought a large farm in Tyhee. She graduated from LDS Seminary and from Pocatello High School in 1933.

Fourth District rodeo officials announce state qualifiers

BLACKFOOT - With the final two rodeos of the Fourth District High School Rodeo Association cancelled, district officials have announced the athletes who have advanced on to the state finals in June.
The top six competitors in each event advance in hopes of qualifying for the National High School Rodeo Finals this summer.
In Barrel Racing, Kimberlyn Fehringer of American Falls is the champion, accumulating 95 points. Also qualifying are Kilee Lehman of Aberdeen, Lyndsie Ekstrom of Highland, Ciarra Driscoll of American Falls, Shelby Freed of Highland and Kyler Duffin of Highland.

4-Hers weigh in fair animals

BLACKFOOT — Nearly 200 animals were weighed-in Monday evening in the 4-H barn at the Eastern Idaho State Fairgrounds (EISF). This qualifies the animal and his/her handler to participate in Bingham County 4-H fair.
Sheep, meat goats and four pigs were carried, pushed and prodded onto the scale.
At the weigh-in, sheep need to weigh under 100 pounds. Goats weighed under 70 pounds and pigs needed to be under 90 pounds.
After the weigh-in, 4-H members took part in a sheep showmanship class.

Elna E. Hunter, 89

May 23, 2011

Elna E. Hunter, 89, of Blackfoot, passed away May 20, 2011, at her home with her family around her.
She was born Dec. 5, 1921, in Blackfoot, the daughter of Fredrich and Ida Linkiet Wieland.
Elna was raised in Blackfoot and graduated from Blackfoot High School.
She married Benjamin Hunter on April 5, 1945, in Seattle, Wash.
They moved to Blackfoot and have resided here since.
Elna worked as a clerk and Dan’s Mighty Market for many years.
She enjoyed gardening, growing her flowers, embroidery and needlepoint.

Vonda Clarice Longmore Fisher, 79

Vonda Clarice Longmore Fisher, 79, of Blackfoot, passed away May 19, 2011, at her home surrounded by her family.
She was born in Blackfoot on Jan. 31, 1932, to Lester G. and Estella May Anderson Longmore. She was the second of eight children. When Vonda was seven years old, she moved with her family to Salt Lake City, Utah. After living there for three years, they returned to Blackfoot where she attended school and graduated from Blackfoot High School.

So close, yet so far in Panther loss

ONTARIO, OR. – The Snake River Panthers wrapped up their 2011 season on Saturday morning, falling 7-5 to the Buhl Indians in the consolation championship played at Treasure Valley Community College in Ontario Oregon.
“Not the way that we wanted to end the season for sure but the kids came out and played their guts out,” Snake River head coach James Carter said. “We hit the ball hard and our defense turned in some big plays today. It just wasn’t quite enough though.”
