Community donates toys for Haitian children

BLACKFOOT — Bingham County Treasurer Janice Lawes (left) and Tanna Beal display some of the toys that were collected for children in Haiti. In two weeks, employees in the Bingham County Courthouse and Heinz Frozen Food in Pocatello contributed enough toys to fill two 55-gallon barrels. Some of the items that filled the drums included jump ropes, jacks, bats and balls, baby dolls, games, books and some gently used items.
"I told people to go as basic as you can get," Beal said.

Snake River ag students share knowledge with youngsters

THOMAS — During two days this week, Wednesday and today, some of the 1,000 elementary students visiting the Ag Expo at Snake River High School (SRHS) will get their first look and touch of agriculture.
The elementary students are from Irving Kindergarten Center in Blackfoot and kindergartners and first graders from Moreland Elementary.
Sponsoring the Ag Expo are SRHS students who are members of Future Farmers of America (FFA).
“The goal of the Ag Expo is to show kids where their food comes from and to show them the agriculture way of life,” said SRHS Ag teacher Justin Patten.

Firth rock solid in sweep of Bonneville JV

FIRTH — The Firth baseball squad continues to roll along as they swept a pair of ball games from the Bonneville Junior Varsity squad by identical 10-0 scores.
The name of the game for Firth was strong defense and stellar pitching evident by a pair of complete game gems that were thrown by Conner Montgomery and Brenner Coughlan who pitched ahead of a defense that committed just one error between the two ball games.

BURLEY — Mallory Beth Monroe, the 1-year-old daughter of Matt and Shannon Turner Monroe of Burley, passed away peacefully in her daddy’s arms in the early morning hours of May 3, 2011.

Donald “Duck” Cannon, 64

Donald “Duck” Cannon, 64, of Blackfoot, passed away Thursday, April 28, 2011, at the Bingham Skilled Nursing and Rehab.
He was born Feb. 15, 1947. in Statesboro, Ga., to Grady and Alice Gertrude Lewis Cannon.
He worked at potato warehouses and at the Eastern Idaho State Fairgrounds for a few years.
He is survived by his mother, Alice Tucker of Blackfoot; brothers, Norman (Cindy) Cannon, Dean Tucker, Rocky Tucker, Albert Cannon, Roger Cannon, Ricky Cannon, David Cannon and Bobby Cannon; sisters, Jean (Frank) Attenwiller, Sandra Cannon, Pamela Cannon and Debra Cannon.

Norma Shafer, 85

IDAHO FALLS — Norma Shafer, 85, of Firth passed away May 2, 2011, at Eastern Idaho Regional Medical Center.
She was born Feb. 14, 1926, in Clearfield, Utah, to Lorin and Olive Mae Briggs Moss.  She was raised and attended schools in Clearfield.
On Nov. 21, 1945, she married Robert L. Shafer in Ogden, Utah.
Norma was employed at RT French’s in Shelley and K-Mart in Idaho Falls.
She was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served in many callings.

Bingham to show off talent on Friday

BLACKFOOT — Several talented performers will take the stage at the Blackfoot Performing Arts Center Friday during the second annual Bingham's Got Talent.
The show will begin at 7 p.m. Admission is $3 at the door. All proceeds from the event will benefit the American Cancer Society and Relay for Life. The event is organized by the Jason Lee Memorial United Methodist Church's Relay team, Angels Among Us.

Girl shares realized wish with classmates

GROVELAND — Seven-year-old Paige Turner welcomed her first grade classmates from Groveland Elementary to her Make-a-Wish playhouse Tuesday.
When Paige made her choice of a playhouse, she said, "I'd never seen one before; I didn't know you could fit in it."
Paige's two-story playhouse features a fireplace, kitchen area and steps up to the second floor. From the second floor, Paige and her friends can stand on a porch and a slide descends to the ground from a window.
The playhouse arrived in three pieces last Wednesday.

Lady Broncos sweep Lady Russets on senior night

BLACKFOOT — A trio of Blackfoot seniors took to the home diamond for the final regular season game on Tuesday afternoon as Darryl Pokibro, Emily Lish and Caitlyn Cathey graced the Blackfoot faithful for their farewell performance.
Facing off with Bingham County rival Shelley, the seniors played their part as they swept the double header 21-11 in game one and 18-8 in game two.

County officials prepare for flooding possibility

BLACKFOOT — Bingham County Emergency Management Services Director Craig Rowland welcomed county, school district, city, fire, police and weather service officials to a flood planning meeting Tuesday in the basement of the Blackfoot fire department.
Under discussion was planning for the potential flood season.
The weather patterns are similar to those in 1997, said hydrologist Troy Lindquist from the NOAA National Weather Service in Pocatello. The last county-wide flooding in Bingham County occurred in 1997.
"There's the potential for a decent amount of rain," Lindquist said.
