Kenneth Dixey, 80

POCATELLO — Kenneth “Woosie” Dixey, 80 of Blackfoot passed on May 9, 2011, at Portneuf Rehabilitation Center in Pocatello with his family next to him at his bedside after complication from sudden illness.  
Kenneth was born on the Fort Hall Indian Reservation Aug. 3, 1930, to Lawrence Dixey and Mae Pocatello. He was raised just outside of the Blackfoot city limits most of his life. He attended school  in Blackfoot up until the eighth grade.

Firth senior wins at BPA nationals

FIRTH — Firth High School (FHS) senior Brittney Robinson won first place last week in the nation in desktop publishing at the Business Professionals of America (BPA) in Washington, D. C.
This is the second time Robinson had qualified in this discipline at BPA nationals. The 2010 contest was in Anaheim, Calif.
"I wasn't expecting anything," Robinson said. "It was a complete surprise.
"I was just happy to make it to the top 10," she said. "I couldn't believe I had actually done it."

Voters to choose trustee for Zone 1 in Shelley

SHELLEY — Only one school board trustee position is up for election in Shelley Joint School District No. 60.
Incumbent Loren Lund will face Eva Ochoa in the May 17 election for the position in Zone 1.
Lund has served four years on the Shelley School Board.
“I have a passion for education,” Lund said. “Education has always been extremely important in my life.”

Two seek District 55 Zone 3 position

BLACKFOOT — There are two candidates for the Blackfoot School Board Zone 3 trustee. Elections will be May 17. Bingham County will be running the elections and electors will vote in their regular precinct location from 8 a.m.-8 p.m.
R. Scott Reese, who was appointed to fill the Zone 3 position in January, is running against Marilyn R. Cottam.

Irma V. Tyre Taylor

Irma V. Tyre Taylor, has gone to be with her Maker. Irma was 84 years young. Her wonderful wit and great sense of humor will be missed by all who knew her.
She was born April 5, 1927, in Boxley, Georgia, to Benjamin L. and Agnes Lona Thornton.
Irma loved the outdoors. Her interests were fishing, cooking, reading Louis L’Amour books and watching her family grow as the years passed. To be able to see her great-grandchildren was a gift she always cherished.

Kenneth “Woosie” Dixey, 80, of Blackfoot passed away Monday, May 9, 2011, at Pocatello Care and Rehab Center.
Traditional visitation will begin at 3 p.m. Tuesday, May 10, at the Kenneth Dixey residence off Highway 91 just south of Blackfoot. A prayer service will be held at 6 p.m. on Wednesday at Hawker Funeral Home, 132 South Shilling in Blackfoot. Traditional burial services will be held at 2 p.m. on Thursday, May 12, 2011, in the Gibson Cemetery where final military rites will be presented by the Fort Hall and Blackfoot Veteran Honor Guard.

Penny Gentillon, 35

Penny Gentillon, 35, of Pingree passed away Monday, May 9, 2011, at the Madison Memorial Hospital.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, May 13, 2011, at Hawker Funeral Home, 132 S. Shilling Ave., Blackfoot.
The family will meet with family and friends from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home and again for one hour prior to services. Interment will be in the Ammon Cemetery.

Firth seeks levy approval

FIRTH — Because of the reduced funds from the state, the Firth School District trustees are asking electors to approve a supplemental levy for $300,000 each of the next two years.
These funds are necessary to meet the increased requirements from the state and to continue to provide academic excellence and meets the needs of students, Superintendent Sid Tubbs said.

Grocery store celebrates 50 years in Firth

FIRTH -- Monday marked the 50th anniversary of the grocery store “Stop n Shop” in Firth. Clarence (Shorty) and Pearl Neihart opened Stop n Shop on May 9, 1961.
In its 50 year history, the grocery store has served the Firth community in two locations.
It was first located on the corner of the 200 block on South Main, across the street from Colletts.  
After the Teton Dam broke in June 1976, the business moved to its present location in 1977 at 409 S. Main, Firth.   

Two vie for Blackfoot School District post

BLACKFOOT — Elections for the Blackfoot School District Board of Trustees will be May 17. Voters will decide two of the five seats on the board. Electors will vote in their regular precinct. Polls will be open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.
In Zone 2, incumbent J.D. Tolman is running against Jenny Hong. Zone 2 encompasses a large portion of east Blackfoot including Blackfoot High School, Mountain View Middle School and Stoddard Elementary.
