MORELAND — In a career that includes induction into the National Wrestling Hall of Fame, Idaho Chapter, last Saturday, Laron Hansen is most proud of the effect he has had upon others.
"I get more joy and satisfaction from my wrestlers living honorable lives," said Hansen as he sat in the living room of his farm home before attending that induction ceremony.
Hansen, a state champion at Teton High School and an All-American at BYU, coached teams from Preston and Snake River to team championships. Along the way he influenced the lives of hundreds of young men.

Several fundraisers for Relay for Life scheduled

BLACKFOOT — There are several new Relay for Life fundraisers for the month of May.
There will be a wine tasting Thursday at the Wine Garden from 7-9 p.m. Tickets are $15 and can be purchased by calling First American Title at 785-5511.
The Laura VanOrden/Cindy Campbell Team will be selling roses for $5 for dancers at the Downtown Dance Studio performances at Blackfoot High School May 20 and 21 at 7 p.m.

Talent show earns $3,200 for Relay for Life

BLACKFOOT — The Relay for Life fundraiser "Bingham's Got Talent" raised approximately $3,200, according to early estimates from organizers.
The second annual event was organized by the Jason Lee Memorial United Methodist Church's "Angels Among Us" Relay for Life team. Thirty performers displayed their talents in front of a crowd estimated to be 450 people.
The winners of the talent show were Noelle Johansen in the under 14 age division and Tysen Hansen in the 14 and over age division.

The personal security detachment from Company Golf, 3rd Battalion, 116th Cavalry Regiment, 77th Sustainment Brigade, 310th Expeditionary Sustainment Command boasts one of the most important, and low-key, missions in Iraq.

Contestants show off talents

BLACKFOOT — Thirty acts took to the stage Friday night in front of a few hundred people to compete in Bingham's Got Talent and to raise money for the American Cancer Society.
The second annual event was organized by the "Angels Among Us" Relay for Life team. All the funds raised will benefit the American Cancer Society. Last year, more than $3,600 was raised at the event.
Acts included dancers, singers, musicians and a cowboy poet. Performers were divided into two categories—those under 14 and those older than 14.

Blackfoot students capture Ford/AAA state championship

The Blackfoot High School auto technology team of Morgan Gasca and Dakota Cervenak won the state Ford//AAA Student Auto Skills competition Friday in Boise.
"We're really excited to win," said Gasca. "It was lots of fun and definitely the most stressful competition I've had this year.
"What I learned is if you're not sure about a hunch, take a step back to see if there is another possibility," Gasca said.
"What I learned is if you need to fix something this is light-sensitive, do it inside," said Cervenak. "It was a fun competition that was definitely hard.

Wanda F. Taylor, 91, of Rexburg passed away Wednesday, May 4, 2011, at the Homestead Assisted Living Center in Rexburg.

Firth trio close out home careers with wins

FIRTH — A trio of seniors played on the Firth softball diamond for the final time on Thursday afternoon as the Lady Cougars battled the Hillcrest junior varsity in a double-dip at Firth High School.
At the end of a pleasant day on the diamond, Firth emerged triumphant on both ends of the double dip, winning in convincing fashion 10-3 in game one and then came from behind for a last inning 9-8 victory in the night cap.
"Overall we played okay, there are still some things that we need to do better like getting our bats going," Firth head coach Rachel Olsen said.

Blackfoot High students seek Skills USA championship

BLACKFOOT – Blackfoot High School auto tech students Morgan Gasca and Dakota Cervenak are competing today at the Ford/AAA Student Auto Skills competition. Both Gasca and Cervenak are seniors.
The 90-minute competition begins at 9:30 a.m. today at the College of Western Idaho. The automotive facility is on the campus of Boise State University. The public is invited.
The top 10 teams in the state qualified for this “hands on” contest based on their scores in a written qualifying exam conducted in February.
