Firth improves, but falls to Soda-Springs

FIRTH — Normally, when a team out-rebounds and out-shoots their opponent from the free throw line, that team will find themselves in the win column.
Not so on Tuesday night as the visiting Lady Cardinals of Soda-Springs were able to overcome those two categories in the stat column in a 57-42 win over Firth.
"Soda-Springs is one of the elite teams in our division, they really are," Firth head coach Sharla Cook said. "They have an excellent team and they did a good job tonight of hitting clutch shots."

Vera Oram, 90

Vera Oram, 90, of Blackfoot passed away Monday, Dec. 20, 2010, at Bingham Memorial Hospital.
Funeral arrangements are pending under the direction of Hawker Funeral Home.

Michael Lyle Lish, 55

Michael Lyle Lish, 55, of Blackfoot passed away Wednesday, Dec. 15, 2010, at his home.
A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 21, 2010, at Hawker Funeral Home, 132 South Shilling Avenue in Blackfoot. Family will meet with friends and relatives for one hour prior to services at the funeral home. Military rites will be provided by the American Legion Stewart Hoover Post #23. Condolences may be sent to the family at condolences@hawkerfuneralhome.com.

Marvin Earl Christiansen, 76

Marvin Earl Christiansen, 76, of Blackfoot passed away Monday, Dec. 20, 2010, at Portneuf Medical Center in Pocatello.
He was born Dec. 11, 1934 in Blackfoot, the son of William Earl Christiansen and Orissa M. Hansen.
Marvin graduated from Snake River High School.
He was a member of the National Guard.
On February 1, 1969, he married Judy Deon Winterbottom in Blackfoot. Their marriage was later solemnized in the Idaho Falls LDS Temple on June 2, 2006.

Jack Schild, 76

Jack Schild, 76, of Blackfoot, passed away on Saturday, Dec. 18, 2010, at The Gables Assisted Living Center in Idaho Falls. He was born Dec. 27, 1933, in Pocatello, to Henry Schild and Ruth Lanham Jefferies. Jack attended school at Tyhee Elementary and Irving Jr. High in Pocatello.
On Dec. 31, 1956, he married Wilma Doris Dear in Elko, Nev. Doris passed away in 1973, and in 1976 Jack married Renae Richardson in Blackfoot. Renae helped him finish raising his five children.
He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Mayo Sherald Truman, 86

Mayo Sherald Truman, 86, of Blackfoot passed away Saturday, Dec. 18, 2010, at his home.
Sherald was born Oct. 30, 1924, in Huntington, Utah to Iver Oscar and Meleta Cloe Black Truman. Sherald was raised in Huntington, attending and graduating from Huntington schools. He then spent two years at Utah State University.
On April 3, 1952, Sherald married Beverly Bingham in Groveland. After they were married, they lived in Helena, Mont., for a time, then moved to Blackfoot in December of 1956 and resided there until his passing.

New charges: Police investigate separate BHS hazing case

BLACKFOOT — Five additional students have received a Juvenile Violation Report of misdemeanor offenses after police uncovered a separate hazing-related incident at Blackfoot High School.
Blackfoot Police Chief David Moore said the second incident was uncovered as police were interviewing and investigating individuals regarding criminal activity and hazing among student athletes at Blackfoot High School.
Bingham County Prosecuting Attorney emphasized that the JVR is not a charging document. However, he said, it is often mistaken as one because it is similar in appearance.

Firth woman trains school board members

FIRTH – Teaching school board members their roles and responsibilities, Liz Killpack is in her fourth year traveling across the state of Idaho. Killpack is a board trainer with the Idaho School Board Association (ISBA).
A few of her responsibilities include teaching board members how to govern without micro-managing, ethics, strategic planning and goal- setting.
“Usually boards don’t take time to discuss what’s important in their district,” Killpack said. School districts want to give students a “total education,” but when cuts come, what does that total education look like?

Broncos earn much needed win

BLACKFOOT — Blackfoot head coach Jonathan Packer is fond of saying that win or lose the goal is to get better the next day.
On Friday evening, the Blackfoot Broncos showed that they are indeed better than they were just two nights previous, as they held off a furious Rigby fourth quarter rally, and then pulled away from the Trojans for a 65-53 conference victory.
"We're learning how to win, this game was about learning how to finish and get a win," coach Packer said.

Lady Russets prevail over Lady Broncos 52-49

BLACKFOOT — With time clicking off the clock Blackfoot junior Cerissa Honena let fly with a high arcing shot from the half court line. As the collective crowd held their breath, the ball banked off the glass, banging in and out of the basket only to fall away as the Shelley Lady Russets prevailed 52-49.
