RIVERSIDE — After raising six children of their own, Rudy and Veronica deWit were faced with an empty house.
"I saw Wednesday's Child and wanted to adopt," Veronica said of their initial journey into the world of foster care.
That was five years ago. Although Rudy wasn't too keen on the idea of adoption or foster care at first, he eventually warmed to the idea.
"We've fostered 11 kids since then," Rudy said as he sat at the kitchen table earlier this week. He noted how easy it is for anyone who have ever considered providing such a service to begin the process.

POCATELLO — In about a year, Portneuf Medical Center will have a new cancer center. It will open at the same time as the hospital's new facility does the summer of 2011.
"This is really a historic day for the people of Pocatello and all of Eastern Idaho," said Dr. Scott Pierson, a medical oncologist and hematologist at the current cancer center.
Speaking to a small group of cancer survivors and other dignitaries at a ground-breaking ceremony on Sept. 16, Pierson noted that medical and radiation oncology will be under one roof in the new facility.
BLACKFOOT — Starting this week, voters can vote absentee in the Bingham County Clerk’s office at the County Courthouse. People can vote absentee until 5 p.m. the Friday before the general election.
Absentee voting closes at 5 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 29. Previously, absentee ballots could be cast until 5 p.m. Monday, the day before any election.
Polls in Bingham County are open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. on election day, Tuesday, Nov. 2.

BLACKFOOT – As the sun started to set in Blackfoot Monday night, fears began to rise. When 9-year-old Isaac Patton Green did not arrive home from school, officers began searching the area around Ridge Crest Elementary and Jensen Grove, it was not until 7:51 p.m. that the call came announcing he had been found.

BLACKFOOT — Dennie Hill of Blackfoot didn't expect Tisa Dream Runne to win the Merial Distaff Regional Final horse race at the Eastern Idaho State Fair on Saturday.
"It was really a nice field of mares," said Hill, who shares ownership with his wife Kris. "You couldn't tell who would win the race. I had another mare in it that I thought had a better chance."
"I was pretty damn tickled," Hill said of the horse's win in the $24,500 race. With the win she qualified for the Challenge of Champions in New Orleans, La., in late November.
SHELLEY — The 82nd annual Idaho Spud Day in Shelly begins tonight with the Miss Russet Pageant.
The pageant is at 7 p.m. in the Hillcrest High School Auditorium in Idaho Falls. Eight young ladies are vying for the title of Miss Russet. These contestants are Katie Hatch, Marcy Haney, Stephanie Martineau, Kaitlyn Anderson, Amber Tueller, Kayla Hansen, Rachael Versey and Katelyn Ovard.
To earn this title, each contestant will showcase a talent and outline the community project she will champion.

BLACKFOOT – The 2010 Eastern Idaho State Fair ended its eight-day run on Saturday to a record-setting crowd and the second-highest Saturday attendance in Fair history.
For eight days, an estimated 200,000 visitors experienced the entertainment, rides, exhibits, animals and food at Eastern Idaho’s longest running community event.
