Last year's Distinguished Dude Beau Hoskins, center, is surrounded by candidates vying for this year's title. Seventeen juniors showcased their fitness, talent and self expression in search of being named Distinguished Dude. The event is a fundraiser for Blackfoot's Distinguished Young Women program, which will be March 19 at 7 p.m. at the Blackfoot Performing Arts Center.
March 8th
BLACKFOOT — Voters approved all supplemental and plant facility levies in Bingham County Tuesday by big percentages.
Electors approved the Blackfoot School District No. 55 two-year supplemental levy for $1.975 million by 81.8 percent. The raw totals were 863 yes votes to 214 no votes. A simple majority was needed to pass.
Snake River School District No. 52 had asked voters to convert $375,000 of a previously approved $500,000 school plant facility levy to a supplemental levy for two years. This passed by 448-95 which is an approval of 82.5 percent. A simple majority was needed to pass.
BLACKFOOT — Often when inventors come up with ideas to make a certain industry process easier, they need the help of others to bring their ideas to life.
During a couple of generations and over five decades, Earl M. Tanner and sons Dave, Max and Harvey did just that for many of Bingham County's potato farmers.
"It was solving their problems," Dave said of the role the four Tanners had in growing the county's potato industry into the world power it now is. "Sometimes I think we asked too many questions."

BLACKFOOT — The Bingham County Prosecutor's Office said they have reached a plea agreement in the case regarding Nathan Walker, one of five former Blackfoot High School athletes charged with various misdemeanor offenses.
Walker was charged with one county of principal to battery and five charges of principal to false imprisonment, all misdemeanor charges. The charges were amended last week to identify Walker as principal in all the charges.
 BLACKFOOT — Payment of debt was the topic of discussion among representatives of the Blackfoot Urban Renewal Agency (BURA), the Bingham County commissioners, and other county officers Friday morning.
Butch Hulse, Bingham County Economic Development Director, and Ginette Manwaring from BURA, answered questions about how Bingham County, the City of Blackfoot and BURA joined together in a joint economic development project to establish the Riverview Technology Park. Premier Technology is located in this park west of Blackfoot.
March 4th
BLACKFOOT — Distinguished Young Women (DYW) candidates from Blackfoot read to students Thursday afternoon at Stoddard Elementary.
DYW asks candidates to do community service, said Blackfoot's DYW Hannah Miller.
"This reading roundup provides a habit of service," Miller said.
The library at Stoddard was filled with enthusiastic readers.
Annie Tanner, the VISTA (Volunteers in Service to America) representative, said she organized the roundup reading challenge last September.
March 2nd
MORELAND — To celebrate Dr. Seuss' birthday Wednesday, Moreland Elementary students were treated to fairy tales spun by master storyteller Daniel Bishop from Montpelier.
(Theodor Seuss Geisel, better known as Dr. Seuss, would have been 107 years old Wednesday. Geisel died in 1991.)
At Moreland, students "oohed," "awed" and laughed at all the right places as Bishop told the tales of "Jack and the Beanstalk" and "The Little Red Hen."
Moreland librarian Susan Otterstrom invited Bishop to speak because "I thought it would be a fun treat for the kids."
BLACKFOOT — A pool of 30 potential jurors was selected Wednesday for the second trial involving a former Blackfoot High School athlete, set to begin later this month.
The trial will be for Logan Chidester, who currently faces six misdemeanor charges of false imprisonment and two battery charges. His trial is scheduled to begin March 22.
