Jury selection begins in another BHS hazing case

BLACKFOOT — Jury pre-qualification began Tuesday in the second trial involving a former Blackfoot High School athlete, with 11 jurors passed for cause after the first day of voir dire.
Eighty-three jurors arrived Tuesday morning for jury selection in the trial for Logan Chidester. Chidester faces six counts of misdemeanor false imprisonment and two counts of battery. His trial is scheduled to begin March 22.

Commissioners to read to Head Start students

BLACKFOOT — Bingham County commissioners will soon be introduced to youngsters attending Head Start at the Blackfoot Center, 206 N. Ash, Blackfoot.
Commissioners have volunteered to read to the youngsters in the near future.
The ages of Head Start kids range from 3-years-old to 5.
"Now days, children are expected to know their colors and numbers and be pre-readers before entering kindergarten," said Michelle Dye, coordinator of Eastern Idaho Community Action Partnership (ECAP) Head Start Blackfoot Center.

Bus accident a result of fatal medical condition

BLACKFOOT — A long-time school bus driver suffered a fatal medical condition Monday afternoon, causing her to lose control of the bus she was driving and strike a power pole.
The accident occurred at the intersection of Jewel and Camas streets approximately 2:04 p.m. Joann Jensen, 64, of Blackfoot, was driving the Teton Stage Lines bus with 34 students from Stalker Elementary School. She was traveling westbound on Jewel Street when police say she likely suffered a medical condition, causing her to lose control of the bus.

Kluvers steps down as Search and Rescue commander

BLACKFOOT — Bingham County Search and Rescue Commander John Kluvers has stepped down from his position and handed responsibility to his son, Jim Kluvers, who will now assume the position as commander.
John Kluvers served a three-year term as commander and has been involved in Search and Rescue for seven years. Each commander serves a three-year team, at which point the vice-commander will assume the position. Casey Monson is now the vice-commander and Bill Brown will serve as the second vice-commander.

Joyce Driscoll from Pingree (on left) and Connie Dial from Shelley will appear on The Price is Right at 9 a.m. Tuesday, March 1, on Channel 3. Watch to see who was the big winner for the day.

BLACKFOOT — Two local ladies will appear on The Price is Right at 9 a.m. Tuesday, March 1, on Channel 3. One of these two ladies was the big winner for the day. Viewers will need to watch Tuesday to find out who won.
The two ladies are Joyce Driscoll from Pingree and Connie Dial from Shelley. They are sisters-in-law.

Volunteers donate time, energy at Community Center

BLACKFOOT — Volunteers on Saturday helped clean, move and organize items at the Blackfoot Community Center.
The Community Center is turning a recently acquired building into a teen center and gym space, freeing up space at the existing space for early childhood programs. The trailer, which used to house the teen program, will now be used as the art center. The second location is at 257 W. Broadway.

'Joseph' to open tonight

BLACKFOOT — The Blackfoot Community Players' production of "Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat" opens tonight at 7:30 p.m. at the Nuart Theatre.
The production will run Feb. 25, 26 and 28 and March 1, 4, 5 and 7. Tickets for opening night are $5, with tickets all other nights $7.
The popular musical by Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice—who also collaborated on "Jesus Christ Superstar" and "Evita"—has a family-friendly storyline, universal themes and catchy music.

Juvenile in BHS case found not guilty

Magistrate Judge Charles Roos ruled Thursday that the juvenile facing two charges of misdemeanor battery from incidents that occurred during the basketball season last year at Blackfoot High School cannot be found guilty because the state had not met it's burden of proof.

BLACKFOOT — The juvenile defendant facing charges relating to incidents that occurred during the basketball season last year at Blackfoot High School appeared in court Wednesday for an evidentiary hearing before Magistrate Judge Charles Roos.

Local teachers rally in opposition of education reform plan

BLACKFOOT — At least 75 teachers, parents and students rallied for an hour Monday in support of Idaho teachers and educators and in opposition to Superintendent of Public Instruction Tom Luna's "Students Come First" plan.
Teachers stood with signs on the east and west corners of Meridian and Judicial from about 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Participants were greeted with plenty of horns honking from drivers who drove past.
